Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Not really Williams related, but the skins can only reasonably pay so many O-linemen big bucks. Right now, we have 3 O-line positions up in the air with Williams and Scherff both commanding top dollar and Flowers playing well enough in one year at guard to demand a respectable contract. We cant resign all 3. And with as many holes as we have on the roster, I don't really think it makes to pay Williams and Scherff the kind of money they want. Doing so would certainly mean going cheap at LG, which is less than ideal.
This writer thinks its possible we could resign Flowers and very good right guard for about the same money as just resigning Scherff. Taking such an approach would allow us to pay Trent, if that's what Rivera wants to do. https://www.nbcsports.com/washington...ard-joe-thuney

Must admit I was thinking we should go after Thuney if we can't (reasonably) re-sign Scherff. They will want similar money but I'd say Scherff will be more expensive given his age.

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Looks like the Browns will need a left tackle. From ESPN:
NFL offensive tackle Greg Robinson was being held Wednesday in a Texas jail on a pending drug distribution charge, records show. Robinson, 27, a former Auburn standout who played for the Cleveland Browns last season, was booked by the Drug Enforcement Administration on Tuesday after federal agents said they found 157 pounds of marijuana in a rented vehicle in which he and two other people were riding. I doubt he can claim the 157# was for personal use. |

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
The situation was messy and personal, but Williams also pointed out he wants more guaranteed money in his contract. For 2020, his deal contains no guarantees, and perhaps that's the only hurdle remaining for Williams' return to Washington.
https://www.nbcsports.com/washington...use-ron-rivera First preference was to trade him for a 1R or even a 2R plus Second preference was for him to sign a reasonable 3 year deal and stay Third would be to guarantee his 2020 then he walks into FA in 2021 (assuming 2019 was an accrued year)

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
At this point you have to re-sign him to an extension or trade him. Can't let him play out his deal and walk for nothing next year.

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network explained in his podcast that "the belief is Trent Williams is likely to return to Washington since they've cleaned house. A source told me outright Williams will return to Washington because of Ron Rivera."
https://www.nbcsports.com/washington...use-ron-rivera Has any local guys confirmed this? JP Finlay isnt confirming it but just reporting what Tony Pauline said on his podcast. Who is Tony Pauline? Trents been gone from the local scene for a while so its 100% possible a national non-local person would get the scoop first since this came from someone close to Trent and not from the team. I cant find any other local or non-local corroboration. edit -- Wasnt Trents twitter profile picture of him in a Sooners uni and now hes in a skins uni? https://twitter.com/trentw71?lang=en

And if he doesn't extend him, he can always franchise him next year, though whether or not that qualifies as doing right by him is a matter of perspective. Trent might honestly prefer that anyway at this point. This new CBA is about to add a whole shitload of money to the cap and player salaries. Trent may not want an extension right now. If I were him I'd be fine playing out this season, finding out what next year's CBA looks like, and negotiating accordingly. He might be able to get a deal that looks like 17 games worth and a bigger % of the revenue pie. Hell, Ron could jump on it now and make him the highest paid LT in the game for the next three years, and by this time next year some other dipshit LT will get paid way more because the new CBA will affect the negotiating. Either way this is a great thing. Trent returns and he says it's because of Ron. The locker room galvanizes and welcomes him back. The offensive line gets instantly meaner. Trent could be extended prior to the season starting to take advantage of lower prices in comparison to what the new CBA deal will look like. It's great all around. I don't see Rivera trading Trent, I see him extending him. He knows he needs cultural wins, he deeply understands how the locker room perceives things, and he knows how far this would go towards that.
