Chase has a chance to be a solid lineman for a while, we will see how he does this yr. I spoke with one of the Analyst for the Skins at PFF (I am trying to get to cover them too) and he actually said Brandon graded poorly in pass blocking, I'd have to go watch his snaps but I guess its possible.

Its gonna be big if Chase can step up...his ability could push the Oline from borderline good to great. |

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
I agree, he has the potential to be as good as Z Martin

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
I think our weakness is still left guard. That will be the biggest question mark for the Redskins.

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
Interesting stuff here from PFF on Inside LB play last year. Mason Foster was rated as the most productive pass rusher from the Inside LB spot. Martrell Spaight was the most efficient run stopper in the league from this spot. And Zach Vigil was 3rd best in passer rating allowed when targeted.
I think all of those things make sense - Spaight is know as a thumper and Vigil did surprisingly well in coverage last year, he acquitted himself well. The problem is Spaight may be good against the run but he's a disaster in coverage, and Vigil may have defended the pass well but not well enough to avoid being heavily targeted by QBs. https://www.profootballfocus.com/new...m_campaign=nfl

Anecdotally, he always was a step behind. I believe his slow read and reaction stood out more in coverage because you can clearly see the space between where he was compared to where he should be. I think a SLIGHTLY (not glaring) slow read and reaction by a defender, especially a linebacker can be masked a bit because he usually has some distance when he begins to close on the ball. When Brown and Foster were healthy, they were making stops for losses and only slight gains. It seems like Spaight was making his sure handed tackles after the player had already gained yardage. (i'm sure injuries to the DLine contributed to this) Spaight just always seemed a step behind to me. The coaches saw something they didn't like at the end of the year. Despite all the injuries, he didn't get the playing time a true 2nd stringer should have gotten. I think he is on the roster bubble this year and struggles to make the team. Thoughts?

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
I think Spaight's greatest liability is that he lacks the speed and quickness to start at the pro level. At his combine, he only ran a 4.88 forty and he had the slowest 3-Cone time in the LB group. I admire him because, although he lacks the some of the athletic gifts others at the pro level have been given, he has worked and studied very hard to earn his place on an NFL roster. Nevertheless, it looks like he may never be a starter because of his relative lack of speed and quickness and, as a reserve, he'll always be fighting for a roster spot over other players who are more athletic than himself.

Yeah as really despite having the lack of speed and quickness needed. He will always play the backup role unfortunately.

-Brown is a beast, if he can fix his coverage flukes (and I think he has the skill to do so), he can be a really great player -I've said times and times again I think Foster is underrated, he's a true all around LB, more than decent coverage guy, solid tackler, good blitzer, tough mofo... love this player ! -Vigil played well last season, I'd be really curious to see what he can do behind a healthy and efficient DL ! -I respect Spaight because he's a good tackler, but that's about it, so far the game just seems to be a bit too fast for him (wether it's physical skill or reading plays...).

Brown is awesome against the run. He isn't very good in coverage but I don't care, he needs to be going after the ball carrier at all times. Foster is coming back from a shoulder injury that put him on IR last year. It's risky banking on him playing 16 games this year so we need backups. I don't agree with what has been said about Spaight, Him and Brown are the only linebackers that made plays in the backfield. He has good speed and is aggressive. Now his angles to the ball carrier suck. he is too aggressive at time. He is a ST coverage guy and a last resort backup. Vigil will be coaching HS football in September but will be back around week8 when players start falling apart.. Buchanon will be our backup ILB and he is coming off an ACL injury, Yikes. We really need Foster and Nicholson to stay healthy. |
