Smith will win a SB in DC. Let's make a friendly bet

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Here’s my take on another forum about what to look out for next:

So apparently the compensatory pick situation is a bit nebulous and will be decided by the league after next season based on whether we gained, lost or broke even in FA according to the NFLs secret in-house formula. If we lose Cousins (done deal) and Breeland (I’m hoping) we’re already starting with a huge net loss since our replacement @ QB was via trade (yet another reason to like the move). If the Redskins can be somewhat frugal - because I’m obviously not expecting them to sit out entirely, nor should they - we should definitely have a compensatory pick or two coming our way in 2019.

The NFL has proven over and over that handing out large contracts to other teams stars en masse is a losing proposition. The Redskins are the poster boys for how poorly that strategy works out. The Giants are a great recent example. Apparently a lot of teams have changed the way they operate because of the compensatory rules.

I really think that our handling of FA will be telling. If the Redskins are getting smarter and understand this important change as well as the fact that massive FA spending doesn’t lead to success, I think it will be a great signal that we actually might be heading in the right direction. If they look at the cap space gained from letting Cousins walk and signing Smith for less and go, “Yippy skippy! Now we can splurge on FA!”, I think it’ll be a strong indication that they refuse to learn the lesson and Cousins, Smith etc is very much sound and fury signifying nothing...

If the Redskins manage to make savvy adds while not breaking the bank and forfitting their comp picks, while simultaneously trading down and acquiring more draft capital, I’ll be much more hopeful for the future.

13OA is a really good spot to be in this year because there are 5 potential 1rd QBs. Either they all go before 13 and make it so we have better options to chose from at other positions, or one of the big name guys falls to us and sets us up to trade down for a significant return.

Now that Smith is in the fold we need to address the significant holes throughout the roster. If they take an intelligent 2 year approach via FA and the draft they can upgrade 7-10 spots while maintaining salary balance - all while having continuity at head coach and competence at the game’s most important position.

The road to respectability is clear as day to me. After 3 years of playing .500 football, perhaps the path to something even better is right around the corner.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

I rarely post but I wanted to offer a possible scenario that I haven't seen posted yet. We have the 13th pick in the draft and Alex Smith is now off the market that pick could be huge. I hated to see Fuller leave too, but what if we trade back an added a 2nd round pick or more. Someone will miss out on a QB in FA and need to draft a QB. Don't look at the trade (it's over with there's no use in crying about it now) look the ripple effect of the trade.

Example what if they trade back and get an additional 2nd & 4th round pick for the 13th pick (or possibly more) while being able to resign a stud like Zach Brown. Is that really that bad? Fuller will be missed for sure but it's not the end of the world. The extra pick or picks could help boost the holes in the roster. I feel we could come out okay under the circumstances given honestly, if the FO makes these type of moves in the future. You never know what might happen, but I feel good about having the 13th pick as potential trade bait. No one saw Jonathan Allen being there last year....but what if Mayfield or Josh Allen is there this year?

Smith played 5 years as the starter in KC. His team finished 1st or 2nd all 5 years. We will play out his 5 years here, the question is will Gruden be coaching or someone else.

At this point, its over, and no matter how pissed you were/are, the only option is to accept it and all pull for Alex and the team to be successful. We all know, no one's leaving this team. We're all in it together till death do us part. HTTR!

I’ll make you a bet that this will be one of worst
Trades ever. I like Alex Smith and he won’t win anything us, couldn’t do it with the chiefs.

Do you think we will win more or less playoff games over the next three years than we did with Kirk the last three years?

I guess there is only one player on the team, the QB. Having a good defense, RB, WR, and o-line will be major factors in how well the team does.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

regardless how you feel about smith, the one thing that really irks me about this. both QBs that WE drafted, neither are still on the team. and we didnt get a darn thing in return. if thats not enough to get you fired....

are you trolling? because if he couldnt get it done in KC, with all of that offensive fire power they had, it aint happening here

No way he makes it here 5 years. All it takes is one bad year and it's over. Coach will be gone, front office people could be gone and there will be a new QB. We're closer to 5-6 wins vs. 11-12 wins.

I agree that if next year is less than 7 wins Gruden is gone (8 might not be enough). BUT that's why this is a great signing. If Gruden is gone the new coach can draft his qb and groom him while AS runs the offense.

But I think with a little health and a good (doesn't have to be great) off season this team will be at least a wildcard team and maybe better. Until the team's December collapse we were in the mix and I think AS wins a few of the games that KC bungled. Mainly the Saints and Cowboys games.

I don't see the negativity. With a settled QB and a good off season this team should be a few wins better.

I think the FO gave KC a chance to take a mediocre team and lift them to contender. He couldn't do it. I do not think AS is an improvement just different skill sets. I do know that if he is going to lift the skins above mediocrity that he will need better skill players around him. I like CT and hope he returns to old form b/c that will be a great weapon. I am done with the hopes of Jordan Reed being a weapon. He has played fewer games every season for the last three season and fewer snap percentage every season for the last three. At this juncture that is a trend. The FO has some work to do, I hope they do it.

Jay will have to formulate game plans for a far more conservative QB than KC. I hope he can do that but have reservations.

I will wait to make a prediction on playoff wins until I see the team being built. As it stands now I would say we won't win more but we can't win less than we did with KC.
