Re: Preseason game 1 Skins @ Ravens

Its preseason game 1. It means next to nothing. And JG is no JG when it comes to live breathe football. Grudens teams have always started slow here. I honestly think Gibbs would be eating pizza at 3am studying players for this game - Grudens just eating the pizza.

I have to agree with you for the most part. Harbaugh seemed to be coaching to win the game, and he got to see a lot out of what he has tonight. I know it is only week one in the preseason, but I didn't see anyone at RB that looked like a starting caliber NFL back. Our QB depth is really suspect thus far. IF Kirk bolts and we don't draft a QB(s), we are screwed. Our D is OK, can't blame them for the lopsided score as the Ravens enjoyed just about a 12 minute possession advantage over us. The outcome of these preseason games mean nothing, as they really are just for evaluating talent, but I don't think coach really could say he saw much of anything to evaluate anybody in terms of offensive depth.

Nah. Gruden will get the team into rhythm after the first or second regular season game. Its who he is. He doesnt prep these preseason games like real ones and because of that he does lose ground early in the season, BUT he is a good coach once the games count and will have the team in contention for the playoffs and the division.

The thing is it is all about evaluation of what you have, and he really didn't get much out of this game from the offensive side. You have a mess at RB after game one.

Re: Preseason game 1 Skins @ Ravens thread

Look, the first team offense without most of the starting receivers played 6 plays. Brian Quick had 3 catches. Most of the game they were deep into the depth chart at receiver. I wish I had seen more from the RBs but it's not as though they had much of an opportunity to get a rhythm going. Also, the line looked bad, but we know it is probably our strongest unit, they won't continue to play that poorly. This was not meant to be a true representation of our offense, and so I don't think this warrants an overreaction.

Truth is, the coaches were likely more concerned about seeing more of the defense anyway. That may be why they punted all game instead of going for it on fourth for the hell of it. Maybe not, but they did get some good film for the defense to look at. The secondary depth didn't look great, but Clemons led in tackles. The line and linebackers did alright. Allen, Anderson, Brown and Marley all made some plays. Taylor got a good pressure. Lanier got a sack.

It didn't look pretty. And there are clearly some weak spots on this team, but really given the context and the playing time spread out, this is all about evaluating individual performances and I think you can take enough positive away to feel good about it. I'm just going to hope a RB steps up.

The D looked fine to me for sure. It is hard to keep a score low when the opponent's offense has the ball for almost a quarter longer than yours does. Our first strong O was going to hardly play, so that was fine, but damn, we really have no depth after that judging from game 1. We quite possibly have a qb depth issue as well.

Edit: https://twitter.com/MarkBullockNFL/s...95748675178497

This play is exactly what we were missing last year in our run defense. Anderson gets upfield and disrupts the edge, and Zach Brown did what he does best, he comes behind and cleans up. Allen will do the same for Brown, forcing RBs to bounce outside so he can run them down. It's a good combo to see already.

Edit: Phil Taylor also helped get pressure up the middle and flush the RB out.

Just watched the 1st quarter before going to work (it's 6 am out there):

-Poor offensive line play, Trent Williams got run right by by Suggs on the first drive, then Long got stomped over on the next play. It's pre season, they'll step it up, but I would've liked to see them better prepared than that.

-Excited about Zach Brown!!! Efficient on every play so far. Good to see him next to Foster, even if it's on the second unit, they proved they can handle the middle of the field, making plays in the backfield. They also seemed to like playing together! #Brown&Foster4Starters !

Again, Phil Taylor pressures up the middle and forces a throw on the run, it's caught, and who's there to clean up with a tackle at the line of scrimmage . . . Zach Brown.

Allen's sack was beautiful. He penetrates into the backfield pushing past the outside of the guard, Trail LB 48 crosses behind him drawing the OT with him, if the OT had helped double team Allen then Trail had an open lane straight at the QB, and Allen still probably would have gotten a push. The QB has nowhere to step up too throw so he takes off downfield. Meanwhile, Allen maintains control of the OT with his hands, when the QB runs Allen tosses the OT and displays his quick reaction time and athleticism to dive and make the sack. Dude looks legit in his first look, and hearing him after the game, he sounds like he can't wait for more.

D will be much improved for sure!!!!!! Hopefully we will have a bona fide RB coming out of the preseason. They didn't show much promise this game.
