Plenty of not so perfect teams make it to the playoffs every year.
If we make it there, then we are a playoffs team. If we make it to the playoffs two years in a row, we can be sure this franchise is heading in the right direction.
French, the problem was last night was a Home game against a 5-8 team. If the 'skins somehow manage to back into the playoffs, they will be up against much better competition.

Nothing we saw last night says that this team wants to extend their season.

We just don't have the horses this year...I don't think this team has any "magic" to pull out of a hat to start stopping decent offenses, let alone good ones.

I have read the articles like you all have, that mention his possible landing spots for next year if he becomes a FA - Denver, Houston, Cleveland, San Fran, New York Jets, there is going to be no shortage of teams now to go after him and lock him up.
If I'm not mistaken we do have the right to negotiate with him before other teams? No way this team plays hardball with Kirk, aka "take 20 mil/year or walk." He will get 5 years, 125 mil, 70-80mil guaranteed. Just the way of the biz.

Skins already said they'll tag him again

Is there still room for improvement? Obviously. Have faith in the long term plan. I don't think there's any way McC ignores the defense again this year. And at this point they'll probably bring in a new coordinator just to top it off.
Great post!!!!!!! But your post basically says it all in how we really aren't a playoff team this year. That D can't be counted on for a "must stop". If the offense sputters, we are screwed. I know I tend to be negative, but we played with a purpose last December to get the title, now it seems like "MEH".

Even last year when we were winning out to make the playoffs, our d played just good enough to win. This year it feels like we've forced 3 turnovers in the last two months, and that was our saving grace early on when we were winning games. Last night was probably the best game we've played defensively in months, and they still put 26 on us. Seems like with this team we can never play a complete game.

Re: Post game

Let's not forget that the fumble put the ball on the 6 inch line for the Panthers, and the pick put them on our 18 yard line, with both resulting in TDs. Hard to blame the D for those, and absent those plays, the Panthers managed only FGs.

But still, the Panthers ran all over us, and Cam was over 300 yards. Our D was just not good -- bad tackling, missed assignments, and no turnovers. The D was just poor last night, as was our non-existent run game. I kept wondering why Kirk wasn't able to light up their terrible secondary, and then realized that they dropped a safety deep and applied enough pressure throughout the night to keep Cousins from getting deep looks down the field. And with Reed hurt, Davis deciding to have butterfingers, Garcon dinged up, it just didn't come together.

Overall, a pretty dispiriting night.

I hope not. They should either sign him to a long term deal or let him walk.

That lost was ugly. Worst game of the year (or maybe second to the week 1 game vs the Steelers, don't would have to see that game again).

But it's a week to week league.

AND.

As bad as they looked, that game was a few plays away from being a W. I mean, as bad as they played, it still was a winnable game:

-one blown coverage by Donte Whitner: + 4 points Car
-one blown block by Vernon Davis: + 7 points Car
-one missed extra points: - 1 points Was
-one drop by Davis that would have been a TD: - 4 points Was

Yes this is what I meant by his price coming down a bit.

I am a Kirk fan. He deserves to be paid and will be. I am worried we will fck it up because we have zero leverage. Off games like Carolina will give us at least a little bit of negotiating room. Otherwise Kirk can write his own cheque.

A second franchise tag is an option but a bad one. It's a huge cap hit and leads to bad blood. And what happens in 2018? Franchise again for $34M??

Skins will have to bite the bullet and pay the guy. If we try to get cute it will get ugly.
