Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Matt Jones

STRENGTHS Imposing size with muscular frame. Above-average swivel in hips and perimeter quickness for runner his size. Pistons for feet, chomping and churning through contact to extend run. Has slippery lower body with angle-tackle attempts sliding off. Keeps shoulders square to line for maximum power. Plays with forward lean and is difficult to stop for a loss. Used sparingly as a pass-catcher, but flashes capable hands if asked to do so in the pros. Aggressive in protection, squaring up and striking a blow against free-running blitzer.

WEAKNESSES More grinder than every-down running back. Will hit it downhill, but has very little feel for maximizing run creases. Blind to open running lanes. Drops head and burrows into blockers and defenders rather than seeing open space. Must improve patience in setting up blocks. Can juke and shift when headed to line of scrimmage, but doesn't show much creativity and shiftiness once he's on second level. Needs to keep ball tucked and secured to avoid fumbling issues.

Matt Jones Draft Profile – NFL.com
From that article:

Quote:
Bottom Line
Has very good athleticism for a big running back and is a physical pile-mover who is difficult to stop for negative yardage. Unfortunately, Jones lacks the instincts and vision to fully maximize his physical tools. Jones could become the physical member of a running-back-by-committee approach, with upside as a third-down option.
With good pass pro sounds like a solid 3rd down/short yardage bruiser

Does anyone think that Jones is a future replacement for DY at FB in the next couple years?

Hmm..I do trust Scott...but he has the old Redskins scouts...I don't get it on this one. Hard to see a really tall RB that is in the mold of Morris/FB where that is covered...our need was a 3rd down threat with breakaway speed/change of pace...not a 4th and 1 specialist...since we already have a solid FB

Good ST player, picks up block well, and can punch it in from short yardage. Three things this team needs sorely. How many times did helu whiff on a block and cost us? I know we arent used to drafting smart but this isnt Vinny or Shenanigan making these picks its a guy who has a proven track record. Let the process unfold. Its gonna be a bright sun shiny day.

We desperately need a backup RB that can block on 3rd downs. We still have, what? 7 picks left?

I'm not gonna sweat a RB pickup.

I guess he can play 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 15.

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

I hear that Jones visited the Redskins, so I'm sure McC got to take a good look at him. My only concern are his health history (knee). Other than that, I'm okay with this pick, we haven't had a good pass blocking RB since CP.

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Yeah I think 3rd down pass pro and big guy are the two keys to that pick. If we can make sure the qb(whoever it is) stays clean our receivers have pretty good odds of getting open. I am liking the draft from the concept of what's being built.
