Re: Skins punt Groom

Wow, good cal TAFKAS! Surprise to me, though I will say that as I watched games yesterday, I was very aware of how weak our special team play has been--other teams are pinning people and getting serious return yardage; we're really not.

Groom had a weak average and couldn't pin folks. There are lots of punters out there, so bye-bye. Wonder if this new guy wil be an improvment.

So, we've lost our punter, our PK, and our return man. We've got to fix that part of our game. Specials all but lost the Dallas game with that kickoff return. And field position is crucial--we've been playing on a long field all year, it seems. That affects playcalling and makes it harder to score points.

WOnder if Danny Smith makes it through the year? Who coached specials in Gibbs first tenure?

Re: Skins punt Groom

our ST's still stink... coverage is improved, i'm not sure danny is that great though.

This new guys average is a whopping 1 yard more, or 0.6yards more net average... i'm not sure its really much of an upgrade.

Hm, I'm concerned about this punter turnover. It's going to be hard for our kickers to get used to new holders.

Re: Skins punt Groom

I think they pulled the plug a little to soon...hopefully Groom does not turn into the punting equivilent of David Akers.

Re: Skins punt Groom

The guy was punting awesome in preseason - I know it was only preseason, but that shouldn't matter how he was kicking the ball. Problem is, he hasn't shown the same leg during the regular season.

Re: Skins punt Groom

Groom was near the bottom of the league in punting, if you can't get it done you're outta here, I like the message the team is sending. Losing Tupa really hurt us.

Unfortunately he can't coach from heaven. He died a few years back. Otherwise, he'd be back with the rest of the "Old Gang".

Yeah, I gotta agree with that. We need our players to perform as best as they can.

Re: Skins punt Groom

In Gibbs' press conference on skins.com today, he mentioned that Groom got a good role on a few, so that raised the average up some. Bottom line, Groom wasn't hitting it where he had to, either too short or out of the endzone. THere are lots of punters out there, so you gotta produce, especially if you are a rookie.

We'll see if this new guy is the answer, or the first of a number of auditioning players. Special teams can really help and it can really hurt. And with our offense, losing the field position game is a big problem.

(Guess that's why the call it the NFL--Not for long, if you kick like that!)
