It's too soon to call him the real deal? It's like Jim Zorn's offense? Based on what statistics?

All he is saying is that Zorn went 6-2, before falling to earth. Newton looks real enough, but half a season, isn't enough to proclaim a rookie a success. Other reminders, Horton looked to be the real deal, but after a year, couldn't find it anymore.

Bottomline, If Newton continues to play at this level he will prove himself, and for now he certainly is wowing everyone with his play after a shortened off-season, that is for sure.

Has any rookie QB has ever played this good this soon?

Re: Mad props to Cam Newton

Not as great as Cam, but Rick Mirer had a very very good rookie year with the Seahawks. And, of course, there's the legendary Greg Cook who changed the course of NFL history

Greg Cook ended his career on an injury. Let me ask you this Smoot, what else would Cam have to do to convince you he is the real deal?

Seeing as how he has set certain records, I would say no. But some great qb's also didn't set the world on fire right away. What proves greatness is sustained high quality play over time. Right now he has certainly played at a high level.

And his injury changed the course of football.

I think, and I suspect NC Skins would say the same, Cam has been absolutely outstanding through his first six (or is it seven?) games. But we've seen many players, at different positions across all sports, get off to hot starts only to fade. So to say let's see how it plays out over a bit of a longer sample size is not hate. Not at all.

Every player will have bad games, he showed me enough. If he had 5 bad games in a row wouldn't matter. It seems to some people he has to be perfect.

I think you took NC Skins comments too personal. I mean at no time did I, and probably anyone else, think he hates him and wants to see him fail. Can't understand why you did.

I am in Charlotte NC and there is a group of gripers still griping about Cam. They did not want him picked, especially at number one. They were perfectly patient for Jimmy to develop. They are still trying to come up with excuses. The guy does not even drink alcohol. It's like if he isn't perfect he is a bust. They are searching through the guy's garbage can as I speak. I sympathize with him. Some people are trying to use JaMarcus Russell to disqualify a lot great athletes that are coming up after him. It's not fair. I'm ready to call em out.

Big Ben, Joe Flacco, and Matt Ryan. Before that you'd have to go back to Dan Marino.
