Re: Best Redskins team ever: 1991

1991 would def be the one that I picked

Scored 485 points (30.3/g), 1st of 28 in the NFL.
Allowed 224 points (14.0/g), 2nd.
Differential of 261 points (16.3/g), 1st

now we're happy to sniff 30 points, much less AVERAGE it

14-2 .. the 2 losses being by a combined 5 points

Monk and Clark over 1000 yards each.. Byner over 1000.. strong 600 something from Ervins (just saw a guy wearing his jersey Sunday)

Re: Best Redskins team ever: 1991

The 1983 team was unbelievable, 500+ points, plus 46 (or so) turnover ratio, 2 losses by a combined 2 points. But in the end they didn't win the Super Bowl so the edge has to go to the 1991 team in my book.

Plus, in my mind, 1991 felt more legitimate than 1982 or 1987. Not to diminish what we did those years. And you can argue it was more impressive perhaps to win in strike shortened seasons. But to dominate from start to finish in a full season like we did in 1991 tends to feel a bit more special.

And don't forget about the 1986 team. We were pretty damn awesome that year. Unfortunately the Giants were just slightly more awesome.

What we had in those days that we have lost since is.....confidence. We were confident the team could pull out a win regardless what the score was. Mostly, I am relieved when the game is over in the last couple of years.
I look forward to Bruce and Shanny delivering that type confidence once more. AND the right "feel" seems to be progressing nicely. They are assembling the right pieces and apparently have the team believing...sooo I will as well!

No doubt. If we were down 10 back then you were thinking "c'mon Skins, we know you have it in you"

nowadays if we just get down it's all groans

It's really too bad about the '83 team, had they won the SB I think we would be talking about them as the best Redskins team, and definitely one of the best teams ever.

The '91 team clearly takes the cake for me. They were so strong on both sides of the ball and on teams as well. They just rolled through the playoffs and as good as the Bills were that year, they were no match for the Skins.

The '87 team wasn't dominant, they were very solid and they played with a lot of guts and character. The SB was just a mismatch of the Skins power running game vs. the weak Broncos D. I loved that team but I think in a non-strike year, they might not have had the staying power to run the table.

I don't remember much about the '82 team, as I hopped on board during the SB. But they've always reminded me a lot of the '87 team. A cast of characters, gutsy, not dominant but very solid. If it wasn't for Moseley that year, they probably aren't in the SB.

From what I see right now (especially after adding Brown to the OL) this 2010 team is going to surprise a lot of folks, I predict playoffs and possibly more. This is regardless of what happens with Haynesworth.

Re: Best Redskins team ever: 1991

The 91 team was no doubt our best ever in terms of performance.

I know that may sound redundant, but I think the typical "greatest team ever" arguments usually revolve around who had the best personnel, i.e. the most all stars. The Skins weren't as star studded, but were dominant from start to finish w/a guy who was essentially a journeyman qb. Rypien had 1 great year, and maybe one other decent year w/the skins. After that super bowl his career might as well've been over.

That whole team peaked at the right time. After that the vets lost a step, Gibbs only lasted 1 more year, and well...

Regardless, that 91 team at least deserves to be mentioned as having one of the most dominant and complete seasons ever. They almost even won that last game v. philly that didn't mean a thing to them.

Yeah the '91 team just wasn't "sexy" enough for the media. Just a bunch of hard working smart vets with a great coaching staff who pulled off one hell of a season.

Man, do I remember the 87 SB................................................ ..

I was 8 years old, and my best friend got to spend the night for super bowl Sunday. During the second quarter, me and Jeremy were jumping up and down, so excited to see the ultimate quarter of quarters happening right before our eyes. Of course, we had a football, and started tossing it around the house.(naturally. We ARE 8 year olds....) My mother had left to go and get the both of us McDonalds cheeseburgers and milkshakes. Then........I throw the football, and completely shatter one of my mothers biggest (I bring up the size because of the fact that it was too big to hide) and I guess one of her favorite home interior pictures on the wall. She got back with about 4 minutes left until halftime.......and she then proceeded to........yes......you guessed it.................turn the television off as punishment.

Due to the stream of tears I conjured up from deep within, she caved during halftime, and that Super Bowl will forever be one of my favorite moments in the history of what is my life. GO POSSE!!!!

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!!!

Re: Best Redskins team ever: 1991

That year was the most fun for me as a fan. If I remember correctly, they were 11-0, then 11-1...I remember counting the weeks as their undefeated record grew and grew. They looked unstoppable and had a chance to run the table.

Definitely the most unappreciated NFL team ever.

While the '87 will always have a special place since it was my first-ever Super Bowl watched...the '91 team was incredible.

Re: Best Redskins team ever: 1991

One of the best memories I have of being a Skins fan is the 87 team and the scabs carrying Joe Gibbs off the field after beating Dallas. The scabs knew it was their last game and they flat out balled against many of the Dallas starters at Texas Stadium on a Mon. night. A lot of the Cowboys crossed the picket line and played in that game while 0 Skins did. Not sure if anyone out there remembers that game but Joe Gibbs had Tony Robinson an old Tenn QB who I believe had just got out of jail running the wishbone. That was greatest coaching job I've ever seen.

But that team got hot at the right time.
This is a secret , but in 1992 .... the ' 87 team beat the '91 team 27-23 at U Maryland football Stadium , sorry to rain on the parade . I do agree , the '87 team was up and down , but that was because Schroeder got hurt in week 1 - or 2 and Gibbs never settled on Williams until later in the year ... but we did win SB's two and Three for old DC !
