Does anybody else think this is the safest bet? It's almost a guarantee that Gaither is better than any 2nd rounder we pick up.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?

if we would get gaither, we would have to sign him to a new contract comparable with the top 10 LTs in the league. this, on top of our 2nd rounder.

if we draft okung we will have to pay him no 4 overall money.

so we would be paying 2 big money contracts for 2 LTs, yet one would be playing RT.

if we dont get okung or another LT in the first round, i could see it but we are talking aobut a big big man at 6'9" and 330+ pounds. i dont know if he will fit into what shanny/kyle want to do.

in years past, i could see the skins going overkill on a position of need and adding both okung and gaither. nowadays, im not so sure. we seem to be running a tighter ship financially.

besides, we can always wait a year and hopefully get gaither for a 3rd or later (ala ozzie not giving up 1st rounder lat year for boldin only to get him this year for much less). or if the ravens just let him go (ala bart scott) we can sign him for no compensation to the ravens.

i have a feeling alot of these RFA guys like merriman and gaither are not happy about being tendered and will want to hit FA market next year.

next years FA should be insane with all the RFA hitting the open market right? barring franchise tags, or anything real crazy happening in the new CBA.

I would do this in a heart beat. He is young and we really couldnt be guaranteed a beeter tackle at that point in the draft. With so many holes in our lineup to plug, we cant afford to waste draft picks when they can be spent on somebody who has already proven themselves.

Sorry, but there are no guarantees. With how deep this draft is on OT's, I wouldnt make the above statement at all.

Plus, I heard the guy is an offensive version of Dexter manley. Hopefully, without the coke habit.

Agreed this draft is deep and worst case scenario we can get him for no picks next year, we are rebuilding this year right.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?

ya know what I think?
I think if the Skins are on the clock and can pick their QB at 4, they will be on the phone with the Ravens to get this deal done for Gaither before they pick the QB.

You can't have a 2nd round LT protecting a rookie QB.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?

Gaither really doesn't fit this offense. I would not give up our second on a RFA Tackle, but I would (If we get a QB in the first, especially Bradford) trade Campbell, Landry, and Andre Carter for draft picks, I believe you could get a second at best for Jason Campbell, a third for Laron, and a fourth for Andre Carter (Also a 7th most likely for Anthony Montgomery). If you take the 2nd+3rd+4th that should be able I believe to get a late first round pick, to get a solid left tackle like Charles Brown, or Roger Saffold. Go with Brown or Saffold instead of Gaither is my point.

Re: Jared Gaither for our second round pick?

Gaither would bring something that our offense (particularly our o-line) doesn't have a lot of and that's stability, but that's a big boy to be asking to zone block

I still think that maybe the plan is to see the zone blocking scheme work with bigger lineman. Of course trading for Gaither and giving him a new contract would be the huge step towards committing to that philosophy. Still even though he's not the best zone blocker he's still a punishing run blocker that's more then capable of protecting a QB's blind side.

Also for what it's worth Shanahan does seem to be trying to correct a few of the things that hurt him when he was in Denver. One of those things was the difficulty his lines faced blocking the bigger D-Lines around the league so now he might be thinking that getting bigger O-Lineman could neutralize the effect. Think about it, right now we're looking at a line that with our current roster could feature Dockery (LG), BMW (RG), and Artis Hicks (RT). If Gaither was acquired that would be 4 "power" types. Rinehart is also a traditional power type.

I don't know if it is him trying to correct the problems that he had in Denver or if it is more him just tailoring the scheme to the players that are here. I do agree with you that he realizes what division he is in and probably needs a bigger line than he typically had in Denver.

One thing that I am happy about is that he didn't bring in 2 pro-bowl runningbacks to primarily "pitch and catch" it. We are going to be a run first team and we finally have a coach who understands that the system's success is based on his players not that players will be successful based on the system.

Campbell isn't going to draw a 2nd.. probably not a 3rd.. maybe not a 4th
