Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

I have some sources that say that Collinsworth like to say provocative, negative, critical things for fun.

Few people are going to be praising Jason Campbell to the skies right now. He is replacing one of the people with the most integrity and dignity in sports, Mark Brunell. No one on the team is going to dance a jig on Brunell's back while he is down.

The reasons we drafted Jason are very sound. It was an excellent, bold move to draft a franchise quarterback when we had the opportunity. Campbell will have the rest of the season to learn from, and hopefully in general fans will be very supportive so he can just focus on getting himself adjusted to his new role.

He has all the tools and he has the humility and winning spirit which are very important. I think Campbell will have a great career, will win at least one Super Bowl, and be one of the great Redskins.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

Did I miss all those games that Campbell played where he showed everyone he can't play? I mean if they think he can't play they must be basing that on some type of evidence. Certainly no one would say a guy can't play when the guy has never even taken a snap. No, that'd never happen.

Let's allow Campbell a shot before any of us even bother fretting over it. The guy clearly has some skills. Yoy don't start at Auburn for 3 years and go 13-0 your senior year and have nothing to offer. Maybe he wont be Peyton but he certainly wont be Ken Dorsey. That's a guy who 'can't play'.

Campbell's performance in the preseason was IMHO superior to Mark Brutal's and infinately better than Collins.

Under a great deal of pressure, he showed a tremendous amount of poise and confidence. On top of that, he was able to make some throws that #8 hasn't made since he has been a Redskin.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Just to clarify, the leak came from someone with the initials MAB.

Anyone have a raging clue who that could be?

Remember Brunelle is second string so Campbell can be pulled a few times at halftime like joe liked to do back in the day.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

do we really think that is possible? how can someone be THAT bad? i mean, brunell- while able to complete passes (short) he was TERRIBLE this season. not to rehash debates, but that is my opinion. its really disconcerning to hear...i'm mean honestly, he just tossed for 132 yards in a complete game! can't get much worse.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

This is an old comment rehashed. I remember seeing it on this site back in preseason. I'm to lasy to look it up, but think about a few things...

Saunders hand picked Collins to come to the Skins as a backup. If he thought he sucked, he wouldn't have done it... even to teach the other guys the system. I say this because Saunders has a bit of an ego and I'm sure he thought he could teach it just fine by himself.

Campbell has always been a winner. Look at the tapes we have posted here. He makes all the throws. Short, long, in the pocket, on the move. All of them. If he can progress towards the mental part of the game at all, he is going to be fine.

The comment probably came from someone who is not a coach or understands the situations Campbell is put in. Running the other teams offense week after week is not the best spotlight to the untrained eye.

Also, expect him to start slow. Many other really good QBs do. If he starts like Kurt Warner... GREAT!

You need to learn to look on the brightside. If you arent positive in your posts, believe me, Campbell will hear about it, and his play will suffer.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

That was one stupid remark by Collinsworth among many! How can anyone know if Jason Campbell can play or not?

It's perfect to use the mystery source for Collinsworth, because if he turns out dead wrong he can fall back on the " I was just going on what I was told" excuse for his misguided remark.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

What connection does Collinsworth have to the Skins? Who is going to talk to him? He is not respected by football people and he has no ties to the city of Washington or the team. Who in management would leak information indicating that the signature player acquisition of the Gibbs II era is going to be a boondogle? If this was coming from Wilbon or Boswell that would be one thing, but its not. It's coming from a 2bit hack who is wrong more often than not.

Maybe by high up he meant the guy selling hot dogs in the nose bleed seats.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

Here is the exact dialogue from the show today. I think the key part is what I bolded:

DP: Clinton Portis, it looks like he's going to be out for the year. Now the Redskins have decided to bring Jason Campbell in as the starting QB. What's this signify to you as far as the Redskins and the rest of the season?

CC: Um...they had to. And it's not even that Mark Brunell was that bad if you look at his numbers. It always just falls on the QB. But there had to be some sign of 'what does the future bring.' I mean essentially now they're selling season tickets for next year. The only thing that makes me a little bit nervous about it, and I won't telll you who it was, but I was talking to somebody in that organization and I was saying you know, "Tell me about the team, the QB situation and all that" and they said "We pray every night for Mark Brunell. Because if Mark Brunell goes down these other two guys can't play at all." And so I was like "You're kidding. You're talking about a #1 pick"
But that was the comment. Now I only heard it from one guy, but it was a pretty prominent guy. So the initial feeling going into this season was that he wasn't ready to play.

What bonehead is going to tell something like that to the press, throwing Collins and Campbell under the bus like that? Whoever it is should be given an atomic wedgie.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation

There is a reason that Collinsworth was kicked off the A-team. There is no way that you can accurately predict how Campbell will do based on his limited body of work.

Look at Delhomme, Kurt Warner, & Tom Brady. You never know what a guy can be until he gets a shot.
