Re: Dwayne Haskins preseason thread

Barring a career season from Case at some point Haskins is going to play. It’s going to take a strong start to the season to justify not making the switch once we get into October or so.

Case will be what Alex was , low risk throws and that is what Jay is wanting.

Gruden, and most NFL coaches, would never do that at this point

Correct!
Keenum is in a new system with new teammates so he needs the snaps to prepare for game 1.

Re: Dwayne Haskins preseason thread

IMO, the best case scenario is to have Case and the current team somehow get us to the playoffs and have Dwayne take over next season (the way that Mahommes took over in his second season).

I know Dwayne is the future, but this team needs some fucking wins and to catch a break from all this unlucky injury crap.

I know we know what Case Keenum is all about and he's not great, but perhaps he can do enough to prevent us from having a losing season. Maybe we get lucky, and we get 2017 Case Keenum, after all he did enough that year for Minnesota to go to the playoffs. And before people say that team was loaded, that very same team almost had the same record as us last year.

Unless Dwayne lights it up and wins from the get go, I'd prefer this other route.

I completely agree with everything you said!

I see absolutely no reason to start Dwayne Haskins this season.

Like you I do hope that Case Keenum can get the Redskins a few wins, and at least get the Redskins either a winning record or at least to 8-8.

Having seen parts of the last two preseason games, and highlights from the games, my personal opinion of Dwayne Haskins is that he has a lot of talent, but right now it is raw talent and he still needs some additional experience.

FYI, Keenum started 16 last year w/ a top defense and won 6.

I just don't understand playing a career journeymen cause he might make less mistakes. That he can manage the game to maybe keep us competitive. Screw that. He also can't make throws like Haskins made to Davis. Instant offense.

If Gruden was truly a good coach he could craft a game plan where he'd put in plays that Haskins is comfortable with. He'd take 15 plays or so right out of Ohio State's playbook. He'd cut down his plays and use basic formations. Throw more on first down where he can max protect. If he did these things then I see no reason why you don't start the rookie. If he struggles then put in Case.

If we start slow which is very possible I say Haskins is starting by week 6 at the latest.

I could very easily see a 2-4 start to the season.

Re: Dwayne Haskins preseason thread

Week 6 is a pretty good ways into the season, Haskins could make significant progress between now and then. If he's the best option at that point of course, throw him in.

I'd make him show it in practice, though. Not much good comes from disrupting the pecking order in the locker room. You need to play the best guy. It's not just the coaches who will be able to see it, the rest of the players will too.

I assume you’ve looked at the schedule. So who, other than the Giants are the Redskins going to beat in their first six games? The Cowboys, maybe? So 2 and four is actually optimistic, in my view. Even with Alex Smith. I mean, did you even see Keenum with the Broncos? How many games did they win with him?

So if that’s the record that will bring Haskins into the lineup, he will certainly be starting before midseason. Unless you are convinced that you will harm Haskins somehow by starting him earlier he should be in there with a game plan that fits his skill set at that time. If you believe he is the long term answer, there really is little reason to wait. Possibly losing an extra game in what is likely to be a sub .500 season cannot be the reason.

Re: Dwayne Haskins preseason thread

I am sure this has been said before, but as much as I like Colt as a person, him being out of this QB race gives Case more time with the #1 offense and Dwayne much needed playing time throughout the preseason; which IMO is better for the team than having reps split among three QBs.

I have never considered this point but it is valid. I wanna give Keenum a fair shake and start him. Haskins will be the man long term, but Keenum is the better qb to start at this point. Many are discrediting his experience and moderate NFL success.

Regarding Keenum, I anticipate him to be between Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins regarding passing aggressiveness. Think he take more chances than Smith for those stating he'll be a Smith clone.
