ASHBURN Joe Gibbs can't remember the name, isn't sure of the date and doesn't remember the team. But he does have vivid memories of the result, and he holds it up as a cautionary tale for the New York Giants.
Years ago, when Gibbs was an assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers, a former quarterback was playing for the Chargers' opponent that Sunday.
"And we had a signal for a hitch," Gibbs said of a pass play that has a wide receiver run a short pattern, stop quickly and turn to face the quarterback. "But for that game, we changed it so that when we gave what had been the signal for a hitch, it became a hitch-and-go."
