Junior Galette went with gut instinct to avoid surgery - Washington Redskins Blog - ESPN
the article is saying it is, because he's back on the field now instead of 3 months from now (if he had had the surgery).

Exactly!! So why don't other players skip the surgery? Sounds very risky in my opinion.

Everything about the entire situation around Galette sounds risky.

Which part were you talking about?

Torn pec recovery, non surgery.

Yes, definitely.

The article said he based his decision, at least in part, on the opinion of Dr. Andrews. That should inspire more confidence than in other players coming back from tears.

Not all pec tears are created equal. If it was torn completely away from the bone then every doctor would say surgery (like Orakpo's). My understanding is it was not a complete tear for Junior.

From the article:

Galette suffered a complete tear of his pectoral muscle while benching 365 pounds on a day off in early June. He said he was taking the bar all the way down to his chest, something he said the Redskins don’t want their players to do. When he took the bar down on his sixth rep in June, it collapsed when his left shoulder gave out, forcing his spotter to help him. Galette knew immediately something was wrong.

Ouch. Yeah then I don't get it.

Maybe doctors are evolving their thinking on care for torn pecs?

he's a good player and he's already out on the field. i'd assume he gets 8 sacks this year.

Re: Junior Galette signs with Redskins (updated)

I gather from the article that his first diagnosis came when he was with the Saints. Since he was having all sorts of issues with the team, he didn't trust the surgery recommendation and sought a second opinion (Dr. Andrews). I guess from that perspective, I kinda see his point of not necessarily trusting a recommendation from a team he was having problems with.

As long as our medical staff is okay with him not having surgery, I guess I'm fine with it.

Maybe we should just leave the MD stuff up to the MD's.

Now why in the hell would we do that? I may not be a Dr. but I have seen an actor who played one on TV AND I have stayed at a Holiday Inn! Clearly, my opinion is relevant and due considerable weight.

[brief deja vu' moment as I recall saden1 lecturing me on how to read court opinions and the meaning of terms of art within the legal field - I still laugh]
