Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
Difference is Wade Phillips has a MUCH better track record as a DC than Hazboro did.

Phillips has been DC 7 times, from that his units performed to where he was either interim HC or given a HC job 6 times. I don't know what exactly that means, I take it that he is not a great HC, but knows how to work in a team environment and get his defenses to perform. His average stint at any job is about 3 years. In my opinion that would be a good thing, if he came in got the D going. That said if we brought in a young aggressive guy that might be good too. I just want a competent D Coordinator, don't really care which style he has. |

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
Phillips would be a good stop gap and he's a master of the 3-4. We could do a lot worse. There's a lot more to being a good coach than emotion.

As for Phillips, he's a better DC than Haslett and a better HC than Gruden. His track record shows it

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
Well the whole team was lousy in Detroit at that time. Barry interests me because he was most recently a special teams coordinator as well, and from what I hear many think he has HC potential

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
I want someone that will require discipline, that is something this defense and for that matter the whole team has lacked since Gibbs left. Yeah, I've seen Phillips throughout his boring career, he is a decent DC.(better than Haslett for sure) I'm not satisfied with being average after 21 years of losing, I want a young hungry guy that wants to prove himself. I'm tired of retreads doing the same shit with different teams and getting canned after a few years. I want a winner who will change the attitude of the defense like a young Richie Petitbone. Give that Barry guy a chance, sure why not?

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
I will take a discipline guy if they get one, but your discounting of Phillips is ridiculous. I don't think he ever was fired as a DC and he is widely recognized as a top tier DC, not a run of the mill retread.

Over his career, Phillips has delivered 7 defenses ranked in the top 5 in points allowed for 5 different teams. He didn't get a lot of help on some of those teams from the offense. If anybody has a better track record on the defensive side of the ball we should hire them. He has the exact opposite track record of Haslett. He has consistently been not only in the top half of the league, but in the top 10. I like the idea of a young hire also, but Phillips is top notch. |

And there is this, which I totally agree with (having seen it over and over). Short term, yes. Long term, no.

The 3rd year in Philly, his defense was back up to 14th. He followed up the bad year in Denver with having the 3rd ranked D in 91. After the bad year in Buff, he lead the 2nd ranked D in the league in 99. San Diego, he was back to 7th after the bad year there. There are going to be good years and bad years because of injury, personnel changes and the dependency on the offense to not leave you on the field for 3/4 of the game. His last year in Houston, his defense, as bad as it was still had a better ranking than their terrible offense. Bleacher report analysis isn't the best out there but the author did point out how defensive rankings were like a roller coaster with huge swings up and down. At least the author of that article doesn't split his time covering English Premier League Soccer. Phillips has averaged ranking 14.5 in points allowed over his career. He is averaging being in the top half of the league. He hasn't squeaked into the top half either. Top 10 defense 10 times. Top 5 defense 5 times. I don't believe anybody thinks Phillips is the answer for the next decade. We aren't the Steelers. He is a good defensive coordinator who would help us in the short term if we can't find the next big thing. |

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
The problem with Phillips is that he is a nice guy, players take advantage of his good nature. We need someone that won't let the insane run the asylum, that's what worries me. The culture in the locker room needs to change, players need to be held accountable with no free rides.

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
A good coach is a good coach. Getting in players faces may work at first, but, without good coaching, it wears thin fast. What matters is getting results. W. Phillips gets results.
Like others have said, he is not a long term plan but he is a HUGE upgrade over Hazlett. I got no problem with WP. I would count us lucky to get him.

Re: Vic Fangio and other to be interviewed for Defense.
I just reviewed Barry's stats from his stint in Detroit...yikes! Gave up the most points and most yards...BOTH years.
I'm not sure why we're looking hard at him at this point. There has to be better candidates out there. |
