Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled

Pffffttttt....
Snyder is not going to name them The Rebels or the Warriors or anything close to being Indian related.
The Redskins are a prominent business/company/team/employer.
Snyder has been enduring a ton of crap about the name this year.
I'm sure hes fed up.
The new name is going to be something very neutral and very approachable and totally noncontroversial.

Just for the record, after all of the debate I have heard and read, I feel that I too am in the third camp. I too do not want to see the team name changed, and I don't really see the name as racist or derogatory, but I do agree that there is way too much bad press, and that the name will have to change at some point in the near future.

My only hope is that the team can retain the colors and theme.

As for a replacement name, I would vote for...

Washington Warriors

Also, whether or not the name is changed, I would suggest that the team go back to the logo that was used in the '60's, and during the 70th Anniversary season....

That helmet is pretty sweet, even equal to our curent one. But if the name does change, we need to move completely away from any Native American theme. It might take 10 years, or 20, or 50, but eventually the same type of people as those for the name-change now would start arguing that Native American mascots dehumanize them, and we'd have to put up with this crap all over again.

That's already happening with other teams, just to a quieter degree than what we're seeing. As I think has been stated in this thread, the Redskins are basically just the prime target/first domino.
My guess is that if and when we do change it will be pretty much whole sale with only the team colors staying the same. Like Alvin Walton said, the organization will do everything they can to make the new name/logo non-controversial, which ironically will make it controversial to many current fans.

I just wish the name Washington Generals wasn't so tainted because of the Harlem Globetrotters, because I feel like that would be a decent name.

Certainly there are exceptions to the rule, but there are those who are so staunchly for their political party that they'll go along with anything that party says or does, and will argue for those actions - even if they don't understand what it is they are fighting for. And I believe when President Obama and a few other political figures came out against the name, that was enough to sway a few sitting on the fence, over to the "change name" camp.
Agreed. As someone who's spent the last few years ridiculing my republican friends over a few things, I can't help but see some of their warnings about other things in action on this issue.

I don't know if the vast majority of people see things this way, but I'm certainly on the same page as you at this point.

But therein lies the issue for me that is going to forever make it difficult for me to change from the keep-the-name camp to the change-the-name camp.

If, up until a point, there was no significant proof of disparagement etc, then why should I put any stock into that changing over time?
If when the team was named... when the cases were previously fought... when the name was trademarked... if there was no problem then, why should I give any credit to the idea that there is a problem now or in the future?

If there never existed a problem then the whole platform upon which the change-the-name camp sits goes away... Simply rallying more people onto their non-existent platform doesn't do anything for me.

They may able to recruit more in the future under the guise of righteousness and 'making a difference' because, from where I sit, the trend of people wanting to be a part of that sort of thing seems to continue to grow - especially as more and more people become reliant on the internet as a means of social interaction and source of happiness.

But it's not going to change anything for me. I'll see it exactly for what it is.. a bunch of phony nonsense that's been talked into 'existence,' but not really...

This isn't an issue that changes over time... or at least, it shouldn't be.

Generals is a solid name. Not sure how well that would go with the burgundy and gold.

I still like the idea of Washington FC. Don't know what we'd do for a logo, though.

If the name does change, please, please, please, no animal for a name. That would be awful.

If we change, is the feeling we move away from Indians reference all together? I rather keep it indian related.

I would think more people would be bothered by the logo than the name. But who knows. Anyone can be offended about anything

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled

It's ANY kind of American Indian imagery - ultimately the people who oppose it oppose all of it.
Chicago Blackhawks logo requires continued conversation about team's identity versus appropriation - ESPN Chicago

There is absolutely NO WAY we change the name but keep the logo.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled

Im sorry but I have to share this rediculous garbage:

Mike Wise: ‘Daniel Snyder Just Wants To Be Right’ « The Morning Show – CBS Sports Radio

"It appears Snyder doesn’t notice the angry fans, either.

“There’s just a fatigue in the fan base now where they’re tired of players being asked about it, (and) they’re tired of the team spending millions (on lawyers and) lobbyists to defend it,” Wise said. “They’re sort of (tired of it).”

And what would happen if Washington actually won a Super Bowl? What if there’s a parade down Constitution Avenue? That would be arguably the most controversial victory parade in sports history.

“Do we want to sully future memories?” Wise asked. “Do we want protestors off to the side yelling at our players and our fans?”

Seriously?

If Mike Wise threw a rock at a hornets' nest he'd be shocked when they tried to sting him.
