Change the name to Washington Generals and have the Harlem Globetrotters come to town to kick the crap out of us week in and week out.

Okay, I just wanted to add my opinion.

First off, I am Cherokee and have a CDIB card, which by no means makes me an expert on Native American affairs or opinions, I did however grow up on an Indian reservation(Osage County in Oklahoma)

I also spent 10 years living in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Which is the Capitol of the Cherokee tribe(well ONE of the Cherokee tribes). Needless to say I have been around countless Native Americans from almost all the tribes my entire life. I have always proudly supported my teams colors, and never given a thought to term Redskins being offensive. I've NEVER had anyone, other than white people recently, tell me that its offensive.

Oklahoma football has a long history of Indian mascots, even a professional team in the 1920s "Hominy Indians" who beat the New York Giants. The Union Redskins(suburb of Tulsa) are one of the most dominant 6A High School football teams in the state every year.

Basically my point, as a Redskin fan hearing about how offensive our teams name is to Indians. I feel I'm kind of at Ground Zero here in Oklahoma.....And I've yet to meet a Native American that cares what our name is. Honestly I've meet some that wore the colors/logos just for the Indian representation and didn't even watch football.

Also, keep in mind when you see things like the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma finds the name offensive, so that must mean the 189,000 members of that tribe find it offensive.

No. Just because the Tribal Government issues a statement doesn't mean that is "the view" of that tribe. It's all just politics.

Yes- because being offended by a word takes too much of our brain space to process other information. It takes me a half a second to refrain from using a pejorative and another to speak up if I don't like it. Hardly enough to prevent me from my responsibilities.

I won't delve into how words shape communication, culture and influence- there's no point in discussing this if people think words have no power. (There's a reason why the Civil Rights movement came to pass- great leaders emboldened masses of people with words. Some German guy also used words to dehumanize an entire group. Ugh- Godwin strikes again).

But wait a minute. You still support and listen to artists who use the n-word. If you're this spirited about the name "Redskins" and compare it to the n-word, and you say your offended, you wouldn't support that artist and you wouldn't support a team who uses the name. If I'm offended about something, it makes me angry to even hear about it. I don't want to hear it, see it, touch it, taste it...I don't want it around me at all. If I "tolerate" it in my entertainment, I'm not offended. It's as simple as that.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled

Does the current usage of the word "Redskins" mean anything at all?

It's us, the football team and fans, for crying out loud.

You want to go after the people using it as a slur, go after the Hollywood fat cats with the rights to all those old movies that started using "Redskins" pejoratively. Instead of the millions of people that cheer the word as a symbol to look up to.

F-in PC idiots.

Please re-read my stance on boycotting. Another example- not a fan of Orson Scott Card's personal beliefs and public statements. Huge fan of Ender's Game. Wagner was one hell of a composer despite being an unapologetic anti-Semite. Mel Gibson's drunken rants? Don't tell me some of you aren't disgusted by his words, yet still watch his films. Separate the art from the artist. A song's message from its offensive content. A team from its nickname. It's the same way I can dance to "Ain't No Fun" in a club without stomping off the floor because of its misogynist (yes, offensive) lyrics.

Although I see the word Redskin as an offensive label, I tolerate it because I don't define the team I root for by its mascot or nickname. Being from the DMV area ties me to this team. I understand not everyone weighs the word equally right now. Just like how the n-bomb was part of everyday vernacular not so long ago, it took a few decades for the word to become universally rejected (despite some who say there are more important things to worry about than such words). But with sentiment quickly growing, right now will be tomorrow's misstep. Our future generations will wonder how exactly this name stuck around for so long.

I'll still be supporting this team after the name switches. For everyone holding on to the name for dear life- will you?

Harry Reid Speaks Softly On Net Neutrality

June 4, 2014
Why liberals are singling out Harry Reid over net neutrality - The Washington Post

Those are the newest stories I can find for Harry Reid Net Neutrality. Guy has PLENTY to say about the Redskins but won't waste a single breath to fight for Net Neutrality. Then again the guy has been bought and paid for by Comcast

Comcast is Buying Our Democracy (And Harry Reid Doesn’t Care Because He’s Already Been Bought) | Washington Free Beacon
Quote:
Comcast is the fifth largest contributor to Reid’s campaign committee in the current cycle. The majority leader has received $76,550 from Comcast employees, and $23,000 from the company’s political action committees. He’s received an additional $101,350 from Comcast lobbyists and their family members. That includes $5,800 from Comcast lobbyist Waldo McMillan, a former Reid aide.
Look if he wants to take on the Redskins name and genuinely believes it to be offensive then fine I can at least respect that. However softly having your spokesman, not you but your spokesman, allude to your past support in the middle of the biggest internet crisis since SOPA is flat out pathetic.

Honestly I never paid Harry much mind and just figured him a punching bag for neocons but I at least see now where they're coming from.

Oh I totally understand the threat to net neutrality is real, dangerous and not being taken seriously by most users of the Internet. These multi-page threads regarding the team name has to do with being on a forum dedicated to said team. Reddit has some very good discussions on net neutrality (not to mention a more balanced debate regarding the team name

Can we just change our name to a symbol and be known as "the football team formerly known as the Redskins?"

LOL all these years later and NOW the government cares about Native Americans.

Too bad they don't put their money where their mouths are and actually help them out in a meaningful way.
