Possibility of a First-Round Bye?

I know this may be premature, but it's interesting nontheless:

"What has to happen first is for the Redskins to win out and for the Giants to stumble either this week when they host Kansas City or in the season finale in Oakland. That gives the Redskins the division championship at 10-6 based on what would be a better division record than Dallas and the Giants should either of those teams also finish at 10-6.

The other part, the help, is not likely to happen but it’s possible. Seattle has 11 wins so the NFC West winner is excluded from this discussion. The first thing that has to happen is that the winners of the South and North finish with no more than 10 wins. That means that Chicago, Tampa, and Carolina can win no more than one more game and Minnesota can win no more than two."

So IF the Skins win out, and IF the Gints lose to say, KC the following teams have to lose TWO games:

Chicago: 9-4, 8-1, 4-0
Schedule: Falcons, @Packers, @Vikings

Tampa: 9-4, 7-3, 3-1
Schedule: @Pats, Falcons, Saints

Carolina: 9-4, 6-3, 2-2
Schedule: @Saints, Cowboys, @Falcons

And Minnesota has to lose ONE game:

Minnesota: 8-5, 7-4, 4-1
Schedule: Steelers, @Ravens, Bears

A long shot? Absolutely. However, none of the teams we need to lose have cupcake schedules, so it IS possible.

Should be an interesting 3 weeks...

Re: Possibility of a First-Round Bye?

I have an intersting question, that really dosent pertain to this season, but hypothetically....

What if Seattle Won the West with say a 13-3 record, and St. Louis was 11-5.

THEN say the Skins won the East at 10-6, and beat out the South and North winners. The skins would then get the number 2 seed w/ a worse record, correct?

No I am pretty sure the seeds(and therefore the byes) go to the teams with the best records regardless of their playoff berth "type".

What if....
Bill Pacells comes down with a deadly cold, Joe Gibbs then works a little harder and discovers the cure for the common cold and uses it as leverage to assure a win over the Boys. Then, the 2 of them conspire to take over the world!!!

I guess my sarcastic point here is, we are going to be DAMN lucky to beat Dallas, much less run the table so all this speculation is meaningless.

Oh come now, speculation is at the heart of every diehard fan! This meaningless speculation has instantly turned me into a Kansas City and New England fan and made my football-watching weekend so much more interesting.

The stars have to align and do The Phantom of the Opera for us to get a bye.

This discussion is purely hypothetical, but you forgot one important point - Tampa holds a tiebreak advantage over the Skins since they beat us on Alstott's controversial 2 point conversion. Therefore, Tampa would have to lose ALL THREE remaining games and we would have to sweep ours to pass them in wins. The probability of that PLUS both Chicago AND Carolina losing 2 of their remaining games is about nil. Let's worry about taking care of business against Dallas before looking at hypotheticals.

That is only true in a head-to-head (or where one team in a 3- or 4- way tie has beaten all the others). Tampa beat the Skins, but lost to Carolina, and we didn't play either Minnesota or Carolina. That means you ignore the head-to-head and go to the next tie-breaker.

I can't believe I'm getting involved in this conversation...

Re: Possibility of a First-Round Bye?

first round bye, are you smoking something? How about a bye for the whole playoffs. We struggle against the Cards, come on, and you think we are going to beat the Cowboys, and Giants.

This is all a pipe dream, but just to clarify, if the Tampa Bay Bucs win one more game, they would get the BYE in your senerio, becasue they beat the Skins and would own the tiebreaker if both teams finished 10-6. The skins basically need to win out to control their own destiny, which in my opinion will be damn near impossible. The Skins aren't playing well enough to beat a good team right now, even if all of our players were healthy and they aren't! I am afraid that if we beat the Cowboys this week, that Bucs loss is going to really comeback to bite us. Amazing!! Alstott for 2 and he doesn't get in, could ready hurt!

Re: Possibility of a First-Round Bye?

I should mention - mheisig is talking about a 4-way tie, which is why, given my previous post, head-to-head doesn't count.
