Opportunity for McCants?

Are things setting up for McCants to have a chance in training camp to prove he's worthy of contributing to the team next year? He was signed to a big enough deal last year that they should be able to save some money by cutting him now that cap room is at a premium. Even if we draft Williams I can see McCants hanging on as a possession receiver. Gibbs seemed to like him before camp last year and with the housecleaning that is taking place at that position he should be in a spot to make an impact.

Re: Opportunity for McCants?

Personally I doubt it.

He was inactive for the majority of last season and it just seems like he's not a part of the team's plans at all.

Things could change, but to me it looks like the writing is on the wall for him.

Re: Opportunity for McCants?

I'd be surprised if McCants makes the roster this year.
Moss/Patten/Thrash/Jacobs/Draft Pick
Doesn't leave alot of room for someone who doesn't play special teams.

I agree, I won't be surprised if he doesn't even make it to training camp

Gibbs will likely not carry more than 5 WRs.

Then why draft one? We do have other pressing needs.

Exactly what I've been thinking! Who would be cut to make room? Thrash? Jacobs? I don't think so....Thrash is the consumate pro and a special teams playmaker, and Jacobs could really emerge this year, not to mention that he made a few big plays on ST last year also.
They may decide to just let McCants go to give him the opportunity to play more somewhere else, instead of being inactive for just about every game. I could see them drafting a WR, but in a later round to groom for a couple years from now.

didnt it say in one of canucks reports or something that cutting morton wouldnt save us anything basically this year? like 500k or something. and antonio brown is already cheap as dirt and was effective. dont see brown leaving. i want morton to go but i dont see much financial benefit

Big C, even if it is only 500k in savings......we should take it. We need all the cap space we can get. Morton to me is useless in our offense.

Re: Opportunity for McCants?

Here is something I had posted in another thread concerning who the Skins would use in the "Monk possession receiver role" to go along with all the small, quick receivers:

Quote:
Contrary to popular belief, I think they may not take a top WR in the draft and may actually give McCants a shot at it...at least in training camp. And if that doesn't work out, I could see them going without a bigger possession guy, and just go with Thrash and/or Jacobs in that role, even though they don't really have the size (both about 6'0", 200 lbs.). Actually, I think this could be the year where Jacobs really breaks out....Gibbs had nothing but good things to say about him last season, and he, like McCants, kind of got stuck behind the more experienced veteran guys.
No matter what happens, it should be a good training camp competition to see who emerges....even though most people assume they will be, I don't necessarily think that Moss and Patten are automatically the starters...they still need to earn their spots. And the competition will make ALL of them better!
Remember that Gibbs used to "stash" players on the IR list. I have thought (hoped) all along that this was his way of doing the something similar with McCants....although I'm probably wrong...

Re: Opportunity for McCants?

I hadn't even seen our current WR corp on paper yet but it is enlightening. I Can't see anyway McCants makes this team with these four guys locks for the team.
Moss/Patten/Thrash/Jacobs

That leaves one spot for a WR and with Brown's flashes of ability I'd be surprised if he's gone. They did lineup Thrash some in passing downs at H-Back last year so I guess they could conceivably carry 6 WRs but that doesn't seem likely. I don't even see where we put a drafted WR now. Unless Brown is gone. Either way I think Brown makes the team before McCants. I do think McCants will be given a shot in camp but who is he going to beat out?

Re: Opportunity for McCants?

It's completely up to Darnerian. I've heard his work ethic sucks. If he wants to play he needs to prove himself, 'cause slackers arent starting on Gibbs' team.

Re: Opportunity for McCants?

Brown was a mid-season pick-up that another team (I think Buffalo) had cut, and is another small, fast receiver, which we have plenty of. The only way I see them keeping him is if they cut Morton and keep him solely as a returner/ emergency wide-out.
McCants has the other attributes that give him an edge, but I see what FRPLG means....I don't know who he would beat out, so he would end up as the 5th, almost always inactive receiver again....and that's if they don't draft a WR. That's why I said I could see them going with Thrash or Jacobs as the posession guy.

Rest assured one way or the other Brown is staying he's not just another fast reciever, he's the fastest, and he's electrifying on kick return's the guy stop's and go's on a dime. Morton should be gone I don't see the need for him we have better at every position he play's, possibly we keep him for depth but that's it.
