Cap Update

Here's how the numbers breakdown for the Skins' recent moves (since the last cap sheet update 2/7). The info out there is sketchy so these are my best estimates. Also this doesn't include Barrow or Patten. The post is a little long, so if you just want the summary scroll to the bottom.

Re: Cap Update

Good to know... Maybe we can actually SAVE some money this year and not break the bank on those "big" signings. I just want to see another good pick in the draft like Taylor was. I also LOVE the Patten signing. That way if Jacobs doesn't pan out, we might have another good WR from the draft.

Re: Cap Update

Canuck, I absolutely love that you keep track of the salary cap like this. I noticed one thing though on Rabach's salary cap figures. It appears that you are allocating the $4.5 million in bonuses over the life of Rabach's contract. This should be done for the $2.5 million signing bonus, but not for the $2 million roster bonus. Roster bonuses only hit the cap in the year that they are paid out.

Thanks for the good work man, I love your spreadsheet.

Thanks Schneed. I know from your posts that you are also a "capaholic". If you have any new info or suggestions let me know.

As for Rabach you are correct. I originally broke out the $2 RB over 5 years cuz I wasn't sure when he was due to receive it. I figured I'd go back later and fix it up, but forgot to. Once I made the post I didn't feel like changing all the numbers and totals, etc., considering a lot of the information is speculation in the first place.

Rabach will probabaly get $1M RB in 2006 and $1M in 2007. So for the 2005 cap calculation, you can add the extra $400K to our cap room.

Patten

Here's Patten's breakdown (estimates):

Patten - 5 years, $13M, $3.5M SB
Year...Salary...Bonus...Cap Hit
2005...$660.....$700....$1360
2006...$660.....$700....$1360
2007...$2000....$700....$2700
2008...$2500....$700....$3200
2009...$3700....$700....$4400
Total..$9520....$3500...$13020
2005 cap hit: $1360

I figure we have about $6.8M left under the 2005 cap.

Yeah, and since they seem to be so cautious in spending that $6.8 million, doesn't it lead us to believe that they are saving the cap room so we can absorb the hit when we decide to get rid of Coles? $6.8 million is a solid amount of room, but they know that getting rid of Coles (by trade or by release) will hit the cap with an additional $6 million charge. If they're really done in free agency like Gibbs says they are, the $6.8 million in remaining cap room is a huge piece of evidence indicating that they plan to get rid of Coles. I hope we at least get Moss (or something else) for him if he's going to end up eating us up as deadcap space.

Releasing Coles will take us right up against the cap pretty much. I think we can probably expect some post-June 1st cuts to make room for the rookie contracts that we'll have to ink for the draft picks. Either that or some contracts will have to get restructured.

We may be done in free agency, but the work isn't done yet.
