Tech in Sport

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...crochip_ball_3

When the ball crosses the line, the microchip transmits a signal to a watchlike device on the referee's wrist, making either a beep or vibration.

"Not a day goes by without technology making progress," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said. "We therefore have a duty to at least examine whether new technology could be used in football.

Can we get some of this next, please?

I like it. great idea, it will take the NFL years to even think about trying it, but the fact that it's on the table is good.

Re: Tech in Sport

You guys realize the article is about soccer, right? This kind of technology would be tough to use when spotting the ball in most instances because guys regularly move it forward after the whistle has blown. It might work on a goal line situation, but not much else.

Technology is overrated. We'd have nothing to complain about on our forum if the refs got it all right. Lets not forget when they used the microchip in Hockey and the colored blur followed the puck around. Horrible. Not that I care about hockey...

That being said, I am glad that the ACC will have some limited replay this year for football.

But that was tech for entertainment purposes not to aid the refs.

They could encrypt a frequency and have it tracked around the field so that there was no argument over "was it or wasn't it".

I did, I'm still pissed off about it too. I'm a Red Wings fan and I won't be seeing Stevie Y or Shannie going out in a blaze of glory.

Plus it makes for a VERY LONG off season with the NFL.

I'm having to adopt the LA Dodgers as a substitute.

Re: Tech in Sport

Some wiz kid will hack into the frequency and make the ref's watch beep every time his team kicks the ball near the goal.

It happened to Paris Hilton, it will happen to soccer.

Re: Tech in Sport

they did this cuz there were several games where the ball went over the line and the ref didnt call it a goal, cost teams games. this was needed. it is different in football because it is not AS critical, so they will not look at it as hard. i donnt see anytrhing like this happening.
