Some Potential Cuts and Their Cap Ramifications

Note, I didn't consider players with salaries of less than $400K. Since several such players will undoubtedly be cut, I'd say we'll find about $2M of new cap space once such cuts are made.

I also didn't consider the possibility that other players will restructure. However, given that most of the highly paid players have already reworked their deals, I don't think that's too big of an issue (aside from Samuels' case, which I do discuss).

Mike Barrow
Cap figure of $2.2M. If cut, cap hit of $2M. Savings= $200K

Matt Bowen (cut is possible due to Lott and Clark and Bowen’s injury)
Cap figure of $1.4M. If cut, cap hit of $800K. Savings= $600K.

Rod Gardner
Cap figure of $2.6M. If cut/trade, cap hit of $1.1M. Savings= $1.5M.

Jermaine Haley
Savings= $800K

Darnerien McCants
Cap figure of $1.2M. If cut, cap hit of $1.3M. Savings= -$100K

Chad Morton
Cap figure of $1M. If cut, cap hit of $1.5M. Savings= -$500K

Brandon Noble
Cap figure of $2M. If cut, cap hit of $900K. Savings= $1.1M.

Vaughn Parker
Savings= $700K

Corey Raymer
Cap figure of $1.1M. If cut, cap hit of $300K. Savings= $800K

Robert Royal
Cap figure of $700K. If cut, $0 cap hit. Savings= $700K.

Chris Samuels
Cap figure of $9.7M. If cut, cap hit of $2.6M. Savings= $6.9M.
If resigned to 6 year, $45M deal with a $14M SB, with a projected cap figure of $3.3M. Savings=$6.4M.

So, if we cut all of these people and restructure Samuels' deal, we'll likely "find" that we have in excess of $10 million to "play around with" in free agency. Not too shabby.

The above figures are based on salary cap information obtained via the following website.

Re: Some Potential Cuts and Their Cap Ramifications

with those figures, in my personal opinion cutting the combination of Barrow and Bowen this year isn't worth saving just $700,000 under the cap this year if both guys are able to come back from each of their respective injuries. Bowen was used about the same amount as a blitzer in the time he played than the other safeties playing the rest of the year. Willaims seemed to utilize blitzes from him and springs quite a bit and if Williams likes him and he continues to produce like he did before he got hurt, it just wouldn't be worth the $500,000 created in cap space.

Let's hold off on penciling Barrow in as a potential cut, if Pierce leaves Barrow could be back as the starter.

Well we cut Haley and Parker and the Post calculates it to be a 2 million dollar savings to the cap. How do these number differ so.

Samuels is still the big fish here. If he restructures, we'll have some stepping out money. If not, ugh....

I think I read somewhere, the Washington Post maybe, that Thomas may be close to restructuring his deal which would save the team around $1.5 million

Thomas has been a guy that's been getting more and more of my respect lately. He plays hurt, is a consistent peice of our o-line, and is a hardcore team guy. I especially liked how he was saying how he understood coles' point of view but that if someone didn't want to be here, he wondered why they even came to work. It's nice to know we have two corner stones of our o-line who want to do anything they can to help the team win and aren't looking to jump town anytime soon.

I actually read at ES.com that it was a done deal according to nflpa.com.

Out of all those guys, leaving out Samuels because that it complicated, the only ones that really are worth cutting are Noble and Gardner. I would keep Morton around and have both him and Brown be our kick returners.
