You're the GM - What do you do?
I remember last year there was a thread like this that created some good discussions.. I figured I'd bring it back for this year.
What I would do: Draft Round 1: Robert Quinn OLB, North Carolina Round 2: Jake Locker QB, Washington Round 5: Kenrick Ellis NT, Hampton Round 5: Tim Barnes C, Missouri Round 6: Stephen Burton WR, West Texas A&M Round 7: Depth OT Round 7: Depth LB Free Agency I do absolutely everything I can to get Paul Posluszny (Longshot) If unsuccessful I go after Barrett Ruud (Ex-Allen draft pick, reasonable). Re-Sign Santana Moss, Jammal Brown, H.B. Blades, Will Montgomery, Rex Grossman, and Chris Wilson at the best price possible. Tender Rocky McIntosh, Reed Doughty, and Stephon Heyer and pray for my life that teams have interest. Allow Carlos Rogers, Andre Carter, Philip Buchanon, to leave and show them the door on the way out and in Carlos' case personally drive him to the airport. I would look for some depth at Corner, Outside and Inside Linebacker in free agency. Trades Attempt to trade Donovan McNabb for a 5th-6th rounder in the 2012 draft. Attempt to trade Haynesworth for a 3rd-4th rounder in the 2012 draft. If no one bites, release McNabb and hold on to Haynesworth and well um.. be depressed. Attempt to trade Chris Cooley for a 1st round pick in 2012, if unsuccessful settle for a high 2nd. Lineup LT: Trent Williams LG: Kory Lichtensteiger C: Casey Rabach/Tim Barnes *Casey will be gone in 2012. RG: Will Montgomery RT: Jammal Brown QB: Rex Grossman/Jake Locker HB: Ryan Torain/Keilland Williams WR: Santana Moss/Anthony Armstrong/Malcolm Kelly TE: Fred Davis DE: Adam Carriker DE: Philip Daniels *I'm going into the 2012 draft looking at this position closely. NT: Anthony Bryant/Kenrick Hampton OLB: Brian Orakpo OLB: Robert Quinn ILB: Paul Posluszny/Barrett Ruud ILB: London Fletcher CB: DeAngelo Hall/Kevin Barnes FS: Oshiomogho Atogwe SS: Laron Landry Future I'm looking at finishing 8-8 at best and earning once again a top 15 draft pick. I will hopefully have an extra 1st from Chris Cooley along with a 5/6th from McNabb and a 3rd/4th from Haynesworth. This draft will be all about getting a quality Defensive End along with a Receiver. |

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?
I might die out of shock if we go 8-8 with that team. We should be competitive for Andrew Luck with that roster so locker would be a waste of a pick.
Plus Moss isn't staying, there is a reason why he opted out of his contract that was going to overpay him a ridiculous amount. Neither Puz nor Rudd will be let go. 4 year players who consistently lead their team and the league in tackles are almost always re-signed or tendered. Lastly, there are 32 teams in the NFL. Odds are 8-8 is not a top 15 pick. This year the only two teams that went 8-8 are picking at 16 and 17. |

Moss likely won't stay, and if you're correct than I don't see why we can't target another free agent. Pudz is a longshot as I stated, but Barrett Ruud is more likely to go than he is to stay. He was neglected last year by management in a contract extension when they decided to give it to Donald Penn instead. Not to mention he had a terrible year by his standards. I will not be surprised if he's a target for Bruce Allen this off-season. Okay so that top 15 pick which speaks for itself and can be anywhere from 1-15 could possibly be the 16th or 17th pick? Would you like me to have said top 17 pick? |

London Fletcher showed signs of diminishing skills last year and I expect it to continue on this year. I think you overlook how important both Rogers and Buchanon are to our secondary. The majority of the negative plays go towards Hall/Barnes. There is nobody on our roster that can replace either one. Whichever center (Rabach/Barnes) plays will be absolute dogshit, even more so than last year due to either age or inexperience. On that note, the same thing applies to Phillip Daniels. I believe Anthony Bryant to not only not be adequate (2 solo tackles in 6 games all last season) but I have an inkling that he will get injured anyways being so heavy (380 lbs). I also do not believe Barrett Rudd to be an upgrade over McIntosh, especially considering he is switching systems. Atogwe is a huge upgrade, but I wouldn't expect him to be a superstar, there must be a reason he was not retained. Torain/Williams I believe will be worse than last year. Teams will not underestimate them as much and they will have more wear/tear (torain especially). Moss will not be back, and Davis is a downgrade over Cooley (who we would not get a high second for). Kelly probably won't even make the team much less start. Quinn I believe to be overrated. I think that teams will catch onto Grossman/Shannhans system this year, and we will not be able to catch teams by surprise (we started 4-3). Reminds me of what happened with Zorn when he started 6-2 with a bad team and then the next two years were junk once people saw tape. And yes I believe there to be a significant difference between 17 and a "top 15 pick". "Top 15" talent in my mind are supposed to be "can't miss talents." There are normally not actually 15 of them, its just those "top 15" talents should all be gone by 15. Its not safe at 14/15 that you will get one, so the 17 pick is not something to be overexcited about. |

Also, Buchanon is a plug.. Don't try that lol. Barnes is the best option we have, local Maryland boy who wants to be given a chance. I like his upside. Quote:

Interesting you choose to say Atogwe can't be good since he was left go. One of my good friends is the biggest rams fan you'll ever find (His basement walls are covered in Rams paintings) and he was telling me how ridiculous it was that they let him go, not only because he was a terrific leader. But had just turned 30 years old. You want to re-sign Carlos? Well here's his replacement, only obviously not at Corner. The biggest difference is that he can actually make plays and add a whole new dimension to Landry's game. Quote:
Davis is a downgrade, but Cooley has done enough. Time to get younger and give Davis an opportunity. Kelly probably won't make the team? No, but will he be given a chance? Yes. Was he one of the most dominant WRs in Sooners history? Yep, he has talent. And he deserves one more chance. Are you suggesting we get Roydell Williams back so he can help us "Win"? Quote:
*I apologize for this cluster**** of a post, I just got home and yeah lol |

We have a shot at mediocrity, but we'd have to get very lucky in the off season and probably make some poor personnel moves that would screw us in the long run. We have no shot to be legit though. Its tough to admit. Fans so close to the team have a tendency to be overly optimistic, but if you take a step back you'll see that from a logistical standpoint, yea our season is over before it began. I personally want this to be the start of a rebuilding year. I would much more enjoy watching improvement from a young developing core than to watch a bunch of old declining players fight in the hopes of being a .500 team. |

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?
Good thread, but it seems like we kind of have talked about this, to varying degrees
Here And Here Also, they’ve already cut Andre Carter And they’ve tendered Blades and Wilson And I’m not sure the guys who’ve mentioned are even eligible to be tendered. Then again, who knows with no CBA

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?
Focus on addressing our greatest needs with our best resources: QB, RT, RDE, NT, C/OG
I would spend this next season developing our young players. Allowing them the opportunity to either play there way into or out of a future with the Burgundy and Gold going forward. I would hope to come out of this draft/FA with a long term solution at: QB, RT, RDE/NT, I would avoid spending heavily in FA |

Simple! Trade back, Draft on both sides of the line, and sign FAs for both sides of the line.

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?
First task would be to get rid of Mike Shanahan and find a coach with his best years in front of him, not behind him.

Is it just me who thinks it's inevitable that Mike is setting Kyle up for his first head coaching job? What better way to retire that watch your son take over.

There are LOTS of folks who cover the NFL who are absolutely convinced that Mike Shanahan is greasing the skids for Kyle Shanahan to take over the Redskins down the line a couple of years. That does not make them correct - - but lots of folks see things going down that way...
