Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
From the Post, among other sources (Redskins Insider - Clinton Portis headed to injured reserve)
There will be time to analyze Portis' legacy as a Redskin since he probably won't return in '11 but as for the rest of the season that puts a heavy load on Williams and Torrain plus we just promoted Davis and signed Andre Brown ('09 Giants draft pick) from the Broncos practice squad. This is going to hurt us most in pass protection/blitz pickup since he was one of the best in the game at doing so. I expect us to do more quick, short passes and screens so McNabb isn't back there as a sitting duck on a 7 step drop.

He has been one of my favorite Skins and I was really hoping he would pass riggins this year on the rushing list. If he doesn't come back next year thanks for the effort and memories!

Re: Portis Officially Done for Season-Placed on IR
He missed 5 games and we still didn't see the adjustment to fill the void in pass protection. I think he might be done as a Redskin but I kinda hope not, he still showed something even when he was out there last weekend and I don't think his career is finished.
I'm definitely going to miss his pass blocking though. He played this season like he had something to prove, and he looked pretty good in the limited time we saw. If he can come back healthy I'd give him one more season. He deserves to be the Redskins all time leading rusher and I'd at least like to see him break 10k in a Skins uniform.

I think maybe he could stay in Washington as a backup. He has major health concerns at this point. He also hits 30 in September, and has had way more injuries and carries than other RB's in the league at his age.

It was the perfect start to a great Redskins career. I hope he can come back for one more year somehow...my favorite Redskin (only jersey I own right now). He was also one good game away from 10,000 career yards (77 yards away). I was really pulling for him to break Riggo's record this season. He played GREAT when he was able to, even in his last game. Amazing how RBs consistently hit that wall right around age 30.

What you see is that it's not so much their age, as the total number of carries. When they hit a certain number of carries, it's all downhill from there. Earl Campbell was the only guy who was the exception on that chart, but you can see the other greats. Its why Ricky Williams is still so productive, because he hasnt hit that career number of carries. Unfortunatley, Portis hit that number of carries i believe 2 seasons ago, so what we saw is pretty much right on the money according to that chart. If somebody can find it for me, that would be great. It really is a great learning tool.

2002 - 1872 AP yards, 17 TDs 2003 - 1905, 14 TDs 2004 - 1550, 7 TDs 2005 - 1732, 11 TDs 2006 - 693, 7 TDs (8 games) 2007 - 1651, 11 TDs 2008 - 1705, 9 TDs 2009 - 551, 2 TDs (8 games) 2010 - 282, 2 TDs (5 games) TOTALS = 9,923 rush yds, 75 rush TDs/2,018 rec yds, 5 rec TDs 11,941 AP yds, 80 TDs in 9 years So now...is it too soon to discuss whether he's HOF-worthy? For comparison with other current HOF candidates (rush stats): Jerome Bettis: 13,662 yds, 71 TDs in 13 years Tiki Barber: 10,449 yds, 55 TDs in 10 years Curtis Martin: 14,101 yds, 90 TDs in 11 years Roger Craig: 8,189 yds, 56 TDs in 11 years Terrell Davis: 7,607 yds, 60 TDs in 7 years Marshall Faulk: 12,279 yds, 100 TDs in 12 years I believe Curtis Martin and Marshall Faulk SHOULD be the first in. And the man he was chasing for the Redskins rushing record, HOFer John Riggins (Skins + Jets stats): 11,352 yds, 104 TDs in 14 years. CP was not far behind in yards...with 5 fewer seasons. He'll definitely be in the HOF discussion. If Tiki Barber and Terrell Davis are...Portis will be. His stats are even better than Roger Craig, who many people feel should be in already. If Portis were able to play the 12 and 13 years some of these other players had...his numbers would likely be better. But of course, we have to look at the actual totals...not what "pace" he was on that never materialized. I really hope he's able to come back one more season to get the Skins rushing record and hit the 10,000-yard mark for his career. That will really boost his HOF chances.
