Buying My First HD TV & Need Help

OK so I'm finally getting an HD TV and I have no clue what to buy. I think the biggest screen I can get is a 37 inch because of limited space (38 inch wide is the max) to place the TV. Other then that I'm clueless. So give me some advise on brands and what to look for. Thanks

Matty I'm surprised you of all people should know that electronics are usually out dated pretty quick and the most resent link you gave was over a year old. The other ones are from 2007.

I like the Panasonic and I figured what ever I get I want 1080p. What else do you look for in these TV's.

DISCLAIMER - someone please chime in if I am completely botching what I'm attempting to explain...

One mistake I made when I bought my Samsung a few years ago was not paying attention to the megahertz, so I got a 40" 1080p with 60Hz and I really wish I had the same TV only with 120HZ. When I'm watching something with a lot of action (ie football highlights that are closer to the action than the normal TV angle) I notice pixelization. Its not the worst thing in the world but it can be annoying.

At the same time, I've heard that 240Hz can make some images look kind of weird. Like if you're watching a movie the screen can give it a weird digital TV feel, if that makes any sense. The only thing about this is that you can turn the refresh rate down when you're watching a movie or regular TV and then turn it back up when you're watching sports.

The basic advice of buying a HDTV hasn't changed.

60hz is sufficient for TV and movies. It might be a little less than you need for the newest and most graphic-intensive games, but you'll be happy with it. The one you picked has a ton of inputs and Samsung speakers usually sound great. If you're trying to fit an storage unit nicely and this one lets you get the biggest TV it can fit, go for it. Most people don't notice the differences in refresh rates. As long as you don't invite Matty over, no one will say anything about it other than "nice TV". :cheeky-sm

Samsung is my favorite brand. I have a 42" Sammy and it was the best-looking picture in the store. A few years old and still looks awesome.

I've noticed Samsungs are usually the brightest and clearest displays in the stores. They're one of the best, if not THE best.

Do you really trust a rating site that is paid for by the companies advertising what they are rating? Thats my biggest hang up with these on line rating sites.

Re: Buying My First HD TV & Need Help

im not all that informed about tvs, electronics, etc but i did read several articles a few weeks ago where they talked about how the HD tvs (not usre if its plasma, etc) are very over supplied right now and prices are expected (if not already) to be cut by 25%.

so right now or in the next month they say is the best time to buy a tv in a long time.

I think it's plasmas and LCDs that are predicted to drop in price a little closer to the holidays, so this is good advice OTM.

Firstdown, I'd either way another month or so if possible or if you get a TV from a store see if they have a price adjustment policy: Lowest Price Guarantee Policy Information for Retailers - Get a Price Drop Alert and then a Refund
