Cooley as Holder?

Not to make too much of this at this point, but:

Quote:
Tight end Chris Cooley was holding kicks on Wednesday in Bidwell's absence. "It's probably the first time I've ever been around Chris when he looked a little nervous, something he's not comfortable with," Shanahan said. "I'm not sure he's ever done it before. But Chris has got excellent hands. We wanted to take a look in our OTAs to see if he could, how he handled the ball obviously as a holder, and I thought he
did a good job."
Redskins Insider - Shanahan says Westbrook is still in the mix

Could just be Cooley filling in on an off-day for the punter, and nothing more. But naturally this sparks images of things you could do with Cooley on fake FGs. Let him roll out, use his speed to the edge, and try to power his way past a few smaller guys?

Every now and then we see a snippet of what the new regime has planned. I wonder if there's something to this.

Cooley as backup punter. Cooley as etc

Nothing really to expect, but cool to see options at every spot.

That's different than holder (the playmaker on potential FG fakes), and it was under the old regime.

Hardly relevant to the here and now.

I still don't understand why Todd Collins, a career backup, was never our holder. Also, why is holder such an issue in our team? This for some reason always seems to come up.

Does it matter when the punter or third-string QBis the holder anyway? I doubt Bidwell can run a fake well either. How likely is it for the 3rd-string QB to get a booboo anyway?

Cooley will likely be nothing more than the emergency holder. Nothing to worry about.

You're right it's probably nothing, but I don't see it as something to worry about, I think it's a possibility to get excited about because of the strategic advantage you'd gain on a possible fake FG.

Except for a lack of confidence in Grossman to do it.

I've always wondered why teams didn't put their better players at the position. It isn't a high-risk spot and it seems like it would be an advantage to be able to have your starting QB or one of your speedy WRs/RBs at the spot. Maybe it is a logistical deal with being able to get enough practice to gel?

Coaches always claim that it's all about practice time. That's why we don't see that many QBs as holders anymore. They say that punters only practice punting, so they have a lot of spare time to practice holding as well. If they were to use a player who plays something other than P, they would have to practice extra or take away from their position practices.
