Redskins 2010 Draft Class with Analysis

1-4(4) Trent Williams - OT - Oklahoma
What he brings: This a risky pick. There are concerns about Williams' work ethic and commitment to improving his game. However, the reward could be well worth the risk. He's the most naturally gifted tackle in this draft. He has a quick first step and lateral mobility to prevent NFL pass-rushers from turning the corner, and also has the power and nasty disposition to quickly develop into an effective drive-blocker. How he fits: It was no secret the Redskins and new coach Mike Shanahan needed to add a prototypical left tackle for them to succeed quickly. The addition of QB Donovan McNabb inspires hope in the offense and Williams can bring some stability to the offensive tackle position. Players were in and out of both tackle spots last season, and the team?s best offensive tackle, Chris Samuels, retired in the offseason. This pick was absolutely necessary and Williams will start from day one.

4-5(103) Perry Riley - OLB - LSU
What he brings: Riley is your prototypical linebacker with good overall size, instincts and a nose for the ball. He can clean up his angles and run fits on occasion. He shows above average point-of-attack skills, the ability to shed blocks and is a sound overall tackler.
How he fits: Riley will have the opportunity to move inside in the Redskins' 3-4 defense. London Fletcher is still one of the most dynamic, undersized linebackers in the league, but he won't last forever. Rocky McIntosh could be hard to resign as well. This was a pick for future depth.

6-5(174) Dennis Morris - TE - Louisiana Tech
Morris is an undersized tight end, who will play an H-back role. Won't be a big contributor as a run blocker, but can make plays in the passing game due to his athleticism and above-average ball skills.

Austin is an undersized slot receiver who shows good quickness in and out of breaks as well as the toughness to make a catch in traffic. He also brings value as a returner.

7-22(229) Erik Cook - OG - New Mexico
Cook lacks great inline strength and toughness on the interior. Still, he brings the potential to add depth with quickness and angles to the point in Washington's zone-blocking scheme.

7-24(231)Selvish Capers - OT - West Virginia
Capers has quick feet and much upside as a pass-blocker. It's not that he lacks toughness, but he needs to get stronger in the upperbody and be a more physical run-blocker.

So that being said does anyone know why the fuck we'd even draft a tight and if so why not last? Why not O-line 1st then the rest?

We didn't retain Todd Yoder leaving a need for a blocking TE. This guy is not only athletic but he loves to block, and from the looks of his highlight film he's good at it. On top of that he will not just play TE but also FB and Special Teams. He should actually be pretty effective blocking on kick offs. Also considering the fact that we ended up with two lineman afterwards that I was interested in I have no problem with this pick. In fact I like it.

The thing I didn't like about it though was the fact that they drafted a similar player last year in Eddie Williams (TE/FB Idaho) in that they found a small school TE that they intended to convert to Fullback, but the main difference between the two is that Morris is much more physical.

On a side note I'm starting to think that this year the team won't have any 2010 UDFA's on the final roster.

I thought we had addressed the Blocking TE when we signed Sean Ryan after his tenure with the Chiefs so this pick didnt make sense at first. But movign him to FB i can def see a place for him. he's got great hands, he's tough to bring down and most of all he's an AGGRESSIVE blocker. You want those players that are hungry and that kid looks hungry! Mike Sellers wont last forever. Maybe Morris can fill in like a peyton hillis type of shanahans past.

I was suprised we didnt see us pick a RB. And now with S. Johnson goin to the Titans and Blount goin to the 49ers im kinda worried that shanahan IS ok goin into the season with portis, johnson, and parker. But the day is not over yet.

What I liked most about this years draft, is that the FO addressed the OL which was way overdue. Also, I like the restrain on trading players like McIntosh, Carter, Haynesworth, Rogers, etc. We wouldn't have gotten fair value and they knew it, kudos for doing all the right things!! No RB were drafted and I'm sure they feel that we have some serious depth and they must feel Alridge can contribute.

Well I watched the Highlight vid of Morris he looks like a beast in the run game and he has great hands. Eddie Williams was injuired when we drafted him so that hurt his chances of making the team. If we can use him as a FB or H-back I think we may have found a diamond in the ruff.

No kidding. Looking at those videos and you wonder why the guy wasn't a first round pick. I don't know why the comments say he isn't much of a run blocker -- he was knocking helmets off and blowing people off the line.

He won't get much playing time on offense behind Cooley and Davis though. Look for him mainly on special teams I guess.

I know right. Well technically Cook is a game tape against an average opponent (that beat the Lobos), but luckily he's pretty easy to find. He's the huge white guy (6'6) snapping the ball in case anyone else is interested. Also much thanks goes to the people who posted the videos in the draft thread and the RideOrDie who found the Riley video.
