Portis

When is this guy going to stop getting a pass for his lack of production?

JC gets hammered for being mediocre, Portis is nothing but a mediorce RB in my eyes. No balance, no ability to make guys miss in the open field, no ability to hit the homerun, horrible in short yardage....bottom line he isn't a PLAYMAKER.

Jason La Canfora has an article out that in Portis's last 266 caries he doesn't have a carry over 30 yards.... that is a shocking stat IMO.

Added to all this is the fact that he is a semi-cancer in the locker room.

I don't understand why this guy gets a pass while JC gets hammered constantly.

Re: Portis

He's gone. Should be anyway. But with Vinney at the wheel anything could happen.

Re: Portis

I agree he should be gone...but it seems like Portis can do no wrong in VC and Snyder'e eyes.

Re: Portis

With his contract he's simply not going anywhere anytime soon.

Funny how when the OL was playing so well earlier in the year Portis was playing well, now that we're banged up and not playing well up front his game is suffering as well. That's just how it goes. Nobody should get a pass right now but I think we need to stop singling out individual players and realize this is a team issue.

Re: Portis

I agree.... my point is that it seems like Portis is the only guy immune to the critics.

Everyone seems to think he is the lone bright spot, I disagree.

My critique of Portis doesn't encompass just this season, I'm talking about his whole career as a Skin. And I know he has great numbers, something just seems to be missing.

but you are right, $20 million guaranteed....he isn't going anywhere.

Immune from critics? You mean critics who would, hypothetically of course, accuse him of dogging practice? Critics (again hypothetically) say his dress up routine was a distraction? Critics (more hypotheticals of course) who are former players and current radio announcers who take him to task on the air?

As for his whole career as a Skin - you must be referring to 2005 when he literally carried the team into the playoffs on his legs.

Something missing? Every opponent that I have heard speak of him calls him one of the most complete backs in the league, compliments him on his ability & toughness, and speaks with almost awe about his vicious blocking.

CP is not, has not been and never will be an elusive back. He is power and
speed (yes, speed). He has been unable to use his speed much because the line cant create holes that let him get to the second level untouched and, with defenses keying on him, he rarely gets into a true "open field".

"Missing something"?? Yes, he is missing Adrian Peterson's line that would give him holes that allow him to get to the second level. He is missing a passing game that will shake the defense loose from keying on him.

If his performance has not been the "lone bright spot", it certainly has been a bright spot.

I agree, you've summed this up pretty well. I think the thread can be closed now lol

Well put.

Something that people overlook alot of the time is that Portis can put anybody on their ass when they slide past our broken down line. When a man who stands 5' 11'' and weighs 220 can put 300+lb defensive linemen or linebacker on his back consistantly and also hold the rank of a top rusher in the league - I think he doesn't have to worry much about job security.

good post joe, i normally read the posts before i post but didnt this time and probaly should have b/c you say somethings that def make me stop and think.

but idk, i still think its the other way around. portis is only as good as his blockers, he can only get as many yards as his O line clears for him. he very seldom makes a move or sheds a tackle to get extra yards. at running back i want a game changer, someone who can take a run make a guy miss and take it to the house.

the one bolder part (i know what your saying, portis needs to get to the second level untouched so he has the opportunity to make guys miss/make plays . .cant do that when you have guys on you or if you had to make a move to make a guy miss in the backfield) but there have been times when portis was 1-on-1 with a lb and that lb makes the tackle or portis falls forward.

idk, i dont think portis is as great as most and i think what portis gives us in the runningback position could easily be found elsewhere, hell i even think portis might have been holding this team back the past few years. its really the amount of money and how that hog ties our hands that really bugs me he most thoo.

go skins!!

sorry for the multi posts

I agree with you.... "holding us back" is a good way to put it.

To those who keep pointing out that Portis is such a great blocker (and I agree he is)..... He isn't getting paid $20 mil to pass protect.

funny thing, you all said the exact same thing when people were doubting whether JC had the proper skills to make him a great qb at seasons beginning.

just grinds my gears when people call things "retard" or "stupid" around here. reasonable skins fans can disagree on alot of things and portis' value is one of them. the OP isnt proposing some CP for AP trade, or anything truly retarded.

whats retarded is giving CP such a contract that it makes it impossible to move him when the RB position is the easiest to fill. rookies come in and start right away. there are 20 other RBs in the league that could get as much or porbaly more yards for the number of carries portis has had here.

i like portis, hes done some great things for us but running the ball is the easiest thing to do. betts came in a few years ago and we didnt miss a beat. portis doesnt make people miss so really all he does is get the most yards our blocking and scheme will allow then he falls down (albeit usually forward).

portis doesnt create his own yards after first contact, alot of players could put up similar numbers or better given our O line and run first mentality the past 5-6 years. he gets as many yards as the Oline can clear for him, period. then he goes and bashes these same guys who he should be washing their cars and saying thank you to.

go skins!!
