NFL is not-for-profit, huh?

These guys are tax-exempt, wtf?

Never heard that before. Sounds kind of sketchy at first glance.

Discuss.

The league is. It's franchises are for profit, and that's what really matters. I mean, the league only exists to ensure the franchises play by the rules and to ensure fairness of competition.

The NFL a.k.a. Commissioners Office a.k.a. Governing Body is a non-profit organization because they don't take in income, the franchises do. The NFL merely exists to make sure the franchises are synchronized and are represented in negotiations and arbitrations by a single voice.

Ultimately individual franchises have to file corporate taxes at the end of the year just like every other corporation.

Yeah, I work for a non-profit organization.

We pay our employees and all other normal operating expenses that a for-profit company would. We have to survive and have luxurious things like lights and toilets with water, you know. Pens are nice to have too.

if you mean where's the money come from, i'd guess it's the revenue pool before it gets sent out to the teams, but that's just a guess....

Re: NFL is not-for-profit, huh?

The NFL itself would charge a "corporate overhead" charge to each of the 32 NFL franchises in order to pay the salaries of the commissioner and any other officials/employees of the NFL.

Don't misunderstand the business model. The NFL office is not for profit because it does not collect revenue. It's sole purpose for existence is to further the business success of its 32 franchises, whose goal is to make money as for-profit institutions.

The 32 franchises support the NFL with the corporate charge, and they ultimately benefit financially.

I realize that non-profits can pay their employees. Schneed answered the question I was looking for. Sorry I wasn't a bit more clear.

its all stuck in a revenue pool and shared equally among the 32 teams, as is the cash paid by teams who are under the nfl minimum team salary. if you don't want to pay players, you're forced to pay the league instead.
