that issue will be resolved in due time. most authentic jerseys that were sold at retail in the 1980s didn't have the name on the back. it'll only cost me a mere $25 to get it nameplated. the nfl patch on the collar was first adopted during the 1991 season. |

Re: 1987 Authentic Doug Williams (pics)
Yeah even in 1991 a lot of players didn't have the shield yet (Art Monk and the Oilers Warren Moon are the first to come to mind). By 1992 however, every on field jersey had the shield.

To further extrapolate my point, here is the Athletic Supply NFL catalog for 1989.

Re: 1987 Authentic Doug Williams (pics)
Actually, Russell was the supplier through the 1989 season, with one exception. The season finale, in Seattle, they wore McGregor/Sand Knit jersey that would be worn for the entire 1990 season.
On to the jersey in question. Yes the jersey itself would be considered an authentic retail item. Detracting from its authenticity would be the obvious use of vinyl numbers, not screened numbers which were present until 2001. I have a Russell Theismann jersey with screened numbers and one can definitely tell the difference. The numbers on the Williams are far too thin. To many, I may be over doing the "authentic" thing. But that depends on your definition of authentic. To me, that is replicating exactly what the players wear on the field, and the Williams jersey isn't it. |

Re: 1987 Authentic Doug Williams (pics)
Just a comment on the catalog photo from Athletic Supply.
The Rams is perfect. The Cardinals, Jets and Patriots are not. The Rams since the mid-70's had pretty standard vinyl numbers. So replicators had little problem customizing jerseys for fans. With very few exceptions, NFL jersey until the last 10-15 years, used (as stated above) screened numbers. To screen a number onto a jersey is a far more complicated process, thus retail suppliers simply chose to use pre-cut vinyl. They obviously have come up with a process to do screening now, with the "Customized" jerseys available on NFL.com. The irony is, no one uses screen numbers anymore, so they are just as outdated. |
