Jason Campbell's development

It's hard to not get excited about the season after reading this:

Saunders: "Every time I look over my shoulder, Jason's here," said Saunders, who worked with Campbell three hours a day, three days a week leading up to the players' first days back on the field this week. "He's making progress. He's a wonderful kid to work with. He's extremely bright and has worked extremely hard on his techniques and fundamentals [with] a lot of film work, a lot of board work and a lot of understanding of what we are doing from a schematic standpoint."

Campbell: "In the offseason, you try to put in a lot of work to help put yourself in position to be successful," Campbell said. "You're able to go through more of your progressions than you probably did a year ago because of the time and effort that you put in studying the plays. Coach Saunders and [quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor] have done a great job of teaching me all the plays."

"It's getting back there and trying to set up a lot quicker and getting the ball out of my hand a lot quicker," Campbell said. "[And] knowing where you're going with the ball more, shortening my motion. The coaches are trying to make things easier for me so I can have the opportunity to go through my progressions without being in a rush."


Gibbs: "I don't know if anyone has worked harder than Jason," Gibbs said. "He's paid a price this offseason. There are a lot of places he could have been running around, but he's been here working on football. It's made a difference. He's quicker. He's much more confident."

Rabach: "From last year's OTAs to this year, it's night and day with Jason," center Casey Rabach said.

Moss: "We're light years ahead of where we were last year with Jason," Moss said. "You have to understand last year when he came in and started throwing to [the regulars] late in the season we had had no reps with him. We didn't have the timing we wanted and we were trying to force him to do things that any quarterback would struggle doing. What Jason has done is make a lot of progress to where we want to go."

I can hardly wait for the season. I hope Campbell and Saunders get this bad boy rolling! Go for the throat, never stop trying to score. Lean on Portis and Betts to allow him to make the easy throws.

Yeah, we have to develop that killer instinct. A few times last year we had teams on the ropes and let 'em go.

I hope Gibbs will learn how to run up the score a little this season.

We better never stop trying to score, b/c I am still very concerned about the defense. But this article gets my psyched about JC. I think he's gonna be awesome.

I was fortunate to be at the Skins/Tampa Bay game last season. Even though it was not a great game for JC, you could NOT help but notice (as did the TB fans as well) his unshakeable demeanor, and apparent calm in the pocket.
All I could think about is "this guy looks like the real deal".

I'm not horribly concerned about the offense, I think we've got enough playmakers to have a top 10 offense. The defense is the key for this season. Another showing like last year will ruin the season quick.

This is the type of thing that gets me amped up for the season. I want to see Jason Campbell succeed, scratch that, I wanna see him become great. I hope he gets on the same page with his receivers and they can have a balanced attack on offense this season.

This is the crucial piece--if JC develops, I feel like we can fix the rest. He's got the character, no doubt. I am psyched to see him on the field this year.

I like to hear this. I like what I saw from JC last year. He basically went from 3rd team to 1st team and he played well considering the circumstances. I think JC realizes that it's his time now and the team is finally his. I think we are going to see a real NFL offense with more downfield passing. I want to see ARE and Lloyd step it up as well. But with everybody healthy, and the 2nd year in this offense we should score a lot more points this year.

I totally agree. I think if you look at his play with blinders on it was just average but the context of that average play is far more important. I cannot think of one instance that he looked overmatched, scared, overwhelmed, or simply bad. He made mistakes but mostly he just looked like he had poor chemistry with the skill guys and that is all about practice and repetion.

I think back to the Days of Ramsey and how totally flustered he tended to look. Even when he was playing well you just knew he was one or two plays away from getting walloped and then he'd get up and jam the ball down and look mad. Next thing you know he looks like a highschool QB who can't do anything right. Throwing the ball into 3 coverage and losing the game. He just had so little composure. Never saw that in JC.

Hell even Brunell looked that way a lot.

JC seemed to have the confidence and composure needed. I think those two things are as important as arm strength and accuarcy in being a good QB.

I think we now have a potential playmaker at QB vs. a caretaker in Brunell.

He doesn't need to throw for 4000 and 40 TDs but a solid year with smart decisions and some clutch plays here and there should be the real goal of this team. That is the best long term thing we could get out of this year. At the end of it we KNOW JC is our QB now and going foward and he has shown us that he can be the best QB in the division. JC is what excites me and terrifies me about '07.

I would argue that we already do know that he's going to be everything we dreamed of any more. Of course, nothing is ever certain until it happens (an injury can still derail Campbells career), but this guy has already shown all the physical, and far more importantly, all the mental tools to be successful. The consistency will come.

He will be the best QB in this division no later than next season, and quite possibly this season. If he can outplay McNabb, we have a shot at being a better team than Philadelphia.
