Run the damn football!

Why did Portis only have 14 carries yesterday?

Why did Betts only have 2 carries?

We have a 254 pound hammer on the bench in Duckett... where is he??

This article by Thomas Boswell sums things up perfectly on offense. We need to say the hell with these cutesy reverses and end arounds, and get back to playing smashmouth football. This is what this offense is built for and it plays right to our strength. I think Gibbs needs to tell Saunders to put together a back to basics game plan from here on out and let's scrap the majority of his infamous 700 page playbook.

If we want to win folks, we have to run. It's very simple. Control the clock, dominate the opponent, and keep our seriously hurting 'D' off the field as much as possible.

Let's get back to Redskins football!

That would be nice. i only assumed Portis would of ran at least 25 times against a rush D like ours

Re: Run the damn football!

The thing is, Saunders probably isn't an 1/8 deep into his playbook yet...the offense hasn't shown they can handle it, and has had to do more max protection to keep the defenses off Brunell's ass.

Running the football has been the cornerstone of the Skins offense. It's time to start running the ball, even if coming from behind.

Even though Brunell has yet to be sacked outside the division, max protection is going to be a problem. Portis is always replaced by Betts on third down. Portis is one of the leagues best blocking backs. We no longer have a TE who can pass block for shit. Sellers always comes out for a third WR. So what you have is a very pressured Mark Brunell on third down. I think he's done an admirable job moving the chains under duress, but eventually it will catch up to us. If they blitz on third, we are in trouble. If they drop 7 on third, its tough to get more than 8 yards.

Re: Run the damn football!

The Colts are ripe for the picking if we just pound the ball down their freaking throats. We're a team right now that is perfectly built for playing smashmouth. We have a physical OL and very nice depth at RB. So what's the problem?

I kind of agree with you. However, let's say they can run the football on the Colts. I assume they can. The big problem is gonna be that they can't cover Harrison and Wayne OR stop Rhodes and Addai. So, then you have to go to the pass at some point. Where are they then?

If we can establish the run and grind out the clock, it will keep Manning and company off the field most of the game.

in a game like that... if we can't stop the pass, and they cant stop the run... we win.

we control the clock. We control the timing of the game. Not EVERY pass will be complete, so they won't always be moving forward. If we CAN move forward on every play we will dominate, but we cannot abandon the run game because they jump out on top quickly and we go 3-out on our first posession.

RUN THE DAMN FOOTBALL!
We're too busy running 547 different variations of the screen pass.

I do agree with the need to pound the Colts. But to say they're ripe for the picking is a gross overstatement. If they're ripe for the picking on the ground, then we're WAAAY ripe for the picking through the air.

What do you think Peyton is going to do to our secondary in his house with no crowd noise? [shudder]

They're 5-0 but a very shaky 5-0. The same Titans that took us down took them to the brink. I call that ripe for the picking. If we can go in there and control the ball and clock and keep our pathetic D off the field as much as possible, we have a chance.

Re: Run the damn football!

we were running the ball. it was just the WRs who were doing it.

Saunders tried to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers by bypassing the whole 'throwing the ball' thing.

the middle of the field between safeties doesn't exist to our offense and defenses can just safely compress 8-men in the box, with the safeties covering the sidelines, even Moss, ARE, and Portis can't break through.
