I just don't get it with this guy, he'd be on my all overrated team.

He's the best player on a statistically great D. But let's be honest...who did they play?? GB, Det and MIN twice each...come on

--Let's give the man some credit, he's an excellent player on a brutal defense. Plus keep in mind Chicago had like zero offense for almost all year....Urlacher and the defense were on the field constantly. They also manhandled Carolina and held the same Tampa offense the Skins gave up 36 points to, to just 10 points.

Well, they played who was on the schedule.

Regardless, I would still put Chicago's defense at the top of the list - even more so than Tampa's much vaunted #2 defense.

They were great this year no doubt and can't do anything about their sked and Urlacher was statistically the best BUT, I have a problem picking a Defensive POY at LB who isn't even the leader of the unit. That is unquestionably Mike Brown and even inside guys in Chicago will tell you Urlacher is a cherry picking tackler.

Re: Urlacher named AP Defensive Player of the Year

I didn't really know BU's stats so i went over to espn.com and checked it out.

BU is 13th in the league in tackles w/ 122 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 ff, no int's

Jonathan Vilma has 173 tackles, 1/2 sack, 4 ff, and 1 interception

Another lb who has a great year was Mike Peterson of Jac:

132 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 ff, 3 ints

So if you are looking at stats alone, then the pick looks overrated. But as we all know, its alot about popularity.

Well we can all agree this is his last chance at the reward probably. Barring incarceration I am hoping our kill-shot safety is a the top of this list for the forseeable future after this season.

I think we had a couple of linebackers that had some great years as well.

BU gets a lot of protection from his front four. When he has had to man up against the run in the past and play through blocks he has had issues. People would love to compare him to Ray Lewis but Lewis was able to make plays getting double and triple teamed. The same can't be said for BU. Before this season I was staunchly in the BU is way way way over-rated class but he has had a good year and I am swayed that that he is only marginally over-rated now. I'd still take a half dozen of other guys before him.

I agree, it's not surprising the last time he had a great year was when his defensive line was top notch. He's the kind of LB that needs space to operate in, put a hat on him and you can neutralize him.

I just didn't think he was MVP material, he's a good player but MVP? C'mon.

Plus the guy isn't a play maker. He hits somewhat hard and makes tackles. That's about it. I'd prefer a guy who hits hard, makes tackles and can change a game in an instant.

Of all the things that have been said about Urlacher, I think the fact that he's not really a playmaker sticks out more than anything else.

I agree he is overrated, but he is still a stud. He's the QB of a great defense, is always around the ball, and is good in both coverage and run support.
