Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
I didn't see this posted anywhere yet, but according to a Washington Times source the officials admit they screwed up the call on the Jackson TD:

Not surprising to hear this. I felt like throwing my redskins gnome through the tv when that happened.

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
Not only have there been a lot of screw ups, but they've been game changing or potentially game changing screw ups.

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
well, it doesn't take the points back, but it actually does make me feel better... the eagles know we really beat them 23-10

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
yeah, something should definitely be done, but the problem is the nfl doesn't hire any full time refs. All these guys work different jobs (lawyers, judges, etc.) all week and then come in and ref games on sunday, therefore it makes it nearly impossible to punish them in any way.
I think a good idea would be to put more cameras up at different angles and have a panel of refs monitor them from a booth, while keeping constant communication with refs on field. Coaches should also be able to challenge more calls than they are allowed. For example, we should've been able to challenge the "picked up flag" in the eagles game. Sean Payton should have been able to challenge the no-call on Bush's facemask, etc. Ultamitely, it is not fair to have the game dictated by somebody who is part of the nfl for only one day a week. |

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
The officials now belong in a home eating apple sauce and tater tots. The bad calls and mass confusion have been a circus sideshow. I guess it could be worse we could have refs like in the NBA.

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
Get rid of coaches challenges, put someone up in the booth with the ability to challenge ANY play. This "whistle was blown" and "Down by contact" bullshit pisses me off.

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
I agree. Screw the TV time restraints. It's not like Baseball where there are 5 million games each season and you can afford to drop a few. There are 16 games in the NFL-(not including post season) all of them extremely vital to the overall outcome. I can think of 3 games already this season that bad officiating has resulted in unfair losses to a team. Unacceptable.

I agree with you that coaches challenges are not necessary, but you generally want to do everything you can to limit the power of a replay official in the booth. There would be zero accountablity in replay decisions if we did that, and IMO that would be a mess. I'm generally against instant replay, but if we are going to have it, we should be able to use it to solve those penalty confusion issues. It's when it starts getting to the point where we review critical plays to see if there was holding on them, that instant replay will be doing more harm than good. And you absolutely can't do the "whistle was blown, but the play doesn't end" argument. If we have a system where the Whistle doesn't stop the play 100% of the time, now we have a player safety issue.

Re: Officials Erred on Punt Return Call
WOW someone on hear said that in their opinion, the ref who threw the flag was having trouble getting the numbers right and since a td hanged on his call and the home town fans were screaming the ref was on the hot seat and decided to just pick it up instead of taking the self embarrassing time to figure it out and get it right . . . . .
whoever you are i think you hit it right on the button, i wouldnt think a ref would succumb so easily to alil pressure . . . . . what a F*$K$# joke. i would rather have a ref believe in his call even thoo he saw it wrong then have a ref see it right, throw the flag then pick it u cuz he doesnt want to look like an idiot who got the numbers mixed up . . . Heyer penalty - i havent heard the nfl's response but i did see it was categorized as "unnecessary contact otherwise not in the play" . . .even thoo dockett is a pass rusher and JC was just releasing the ball . . . . oui vay go skins!! ps - weve had 3 tds either allowed or taken away from us this year due to bad calls, is my count correct? heyer, jackson return and ARE (which is bit of a stretch imo) . . does rabachs phantom holding call count? |
