Solid Snake Hates: Walmart

I've ranted on many things on this site in my time here, but today an issue occured that reminded me of the many reasons why i hate walmart.

My hometown has been fighting for months against Walmart, specifically that the town does not want the traffic, congestion, and otherwise miserable hell that walmart inflicts on a town when it moves in.

Just a rural farming community, we have been protesting for months with signs, bumper stickers, and the like, enouraging people to not vote in the walmart. Obviously we would lose countless family stores and businesses, but our community has a great reputation and does not want the filth and trashiness that Walmarts inevitably bring.

This morning, i get the news from my cousin that Walmart has given up on trying to convince the townfolks, and are now going to speak to the local government directly. I know that they will try to buy them off with all the false promises of new jobs and blah blah blah, but i hope morals hold strong and this doesnt happen.

Walmart is bad, people, mmkay? And no this isnt a joke thread.

this is not my hometown but this gives you an idea of similar measures we have taken...we do have signs on some of the buildings here, though...and actually a few barns.

Lame. Where there's a need, a business will fill it. There's a reason that company does so well.

I'm all for capitalism. However, the reason why Walmart does so well is they underpay employees and put the sqeeze on-threaten manufacturers to lower prices. They've historically cut corners in HR and safety to save a buck.

Now, like i said i'm all for capitalism, but I'm also all for residents attempting to keep them out of their towns.

Walmart...bad!!!

How can you underpay someone for holding an item with a UPC barcode to a scanner and then reading the total cost of purchases from a digital display to the customer? How much should one make for neatly stacking tin cans?

By the way, I worked at the local Walmart in my early years.

I should have said Walmart has been historically known to not only not pay very well but also not offer the best benefit package too.

Basically, they've got a bad rep as a boss.

Then apply somewhere else.

Some people just need to work, period. Beggers can't be choosers.

Besides, most of their employees are kids who need gas/cellphone cash, retired people looking for something to do in their free time or people who can barely speak English.

Retail stores are not meant to be careers nor should anyone expect benefits from them. In college, I worked in a nice hotel without ANY insurance or benefits beyond a discount and free coffee. I worked hard and made myself better and got what I wanted from an employer. If I lost my jobs and could only get a job temporaily at Walmart (hope this NEVER happens), I wouldn't be whining about benefits, I'd work to get myself out of there.

I have no issue with the store paying whatever they can or need to to get positions filled, it is how they keep the costs down. If the workers want better benefits, the company will have to take it out of their pay or get rid of some of them from the increased prices and lower revenue.

I respect your argument, and I also agree. But part of that company doing so well was forcing mom and pop stores out of business. I understand that it's the nature of the beast, i'm just complaining because this could personally affect my family and friends at home. For as long as i can remember, we have been peaceful and fine without big businesses here.

We dont want a walmart...we get by just fine and the town stays nice. Besides, there is already one 25 miles away.

Welcome to capitalism. If Walmart thinks they can make money by having a store within 10 miles instead of within 25, then more power to them.

They see your community as having a need for one-stop, low-cost retail services. Trust me, plenty of people will prove them right when they pack the parking lot on a Saturday.

Violence may not be the best option, but it's still an option. Look up chemical moltov cocktail. It's basically sulfuric acid and potassium chlorate. The good thing is that no one will see the bottle being lit, just throw and go. You're not going to win against them any other way. They'll just line the pockets of the local county board, then they'll import cheap sweat shop BS to undercut Americans. I saw the same thing happen in Ashland. Now they want to put one up on a civil war battle field.

And . . . Oh you mean the same FBI that was asleep at the switch on 9-11?

TTE is already filed in the FBI logs under Chihuahua. Lots of barking no bite.

Perhaps you're right. IMO, the number one rule to committing a crime, is to not tell anyone about it. I'm just saying . . .

Was just shown this in a Business Ethics class:

Store Wars: When Wal-Mart Comes to Town - A Review

I don't have anything nice to say about it, so I won't say anything at all.
