Secondary a Primary Concern
So I know a lot of us are woefully concerned about the OL, but there's another unit that merits some "sky is falling" discussion.
And that's the DBs. As I've said before, I wish they had gone after a stud like Grimes or Carr but for whatever reason they didn't. Instead they chose Cedric Griffin, with the expectation that he'll primarily line up opposite Josh Wilson with DeAngelo Hall in the nickel replacing Kevin Barnes. On average, starting corners I believe get about 20-25% more snaps than the nickel. To be clear though, I suspect that Hall will largely be the starter but when a nickel situation is called for, Cedric won't come in to play nickel he'll come in to replace Hall and Hall slides to cover the slot receiver. We'll know for sure soon enough. I thought we stole Barnes in the draft, now I think we got robbed. He's been a considerable disappointment who I think has a lot to prove this summer to even make this roster as a dime cornerback. Question is, are we that much better with Wilson, C. Griffin, and Hall over Wilson, Hall, and Barnes?

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
Who is usually lined up opposite Wilson when Hall is in the slot?

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
Right now, it's Cedric Griffin's position to lose. Will Crawford, Barnes, or Thompson supplant him? Possible not likely at the moment

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
Yep, I'm more concerned with the secondary than the OL. Cedric Griffin will be lucky to make the team. Hall and Wilson are avg. at best, I'm hoping one of the young guys drafted surprise us.

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
To answer the thread question: IMO no, we are not better off personnel-wise this year than we were last year. I think it will be a long year for the secondary. Hopefully someone like Crawford will take us by surprise.
It would have been smart to have landed Grimes.

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
I'd like to see Barnes be the boundery corner with Hall sliding to the slot. C Griffin i think is pretty much done. Id also like to see this kid Crawford play in the preseason as well, he's having a great camp.

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
You know what? I haven't thought so either but we almost kind of need him to

Imo he's no better then Barnes, who is both younger and cleaner as far as injuries goes. I'm rooting for Crawford and Bernstein though. I'm all about youth. Trick love the kids. You heard anything about Bernstein is he playing S only or some CB? |

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
I think the secondary has been battling the o-line for worst area on the team. I would personally give the nod to the secondary right now. Aside from what SS mentioned, our safety situation is very questionable. I do home R. Morris can do something about the secondary. Also, I hope the coaching staff is aware of these deficit areas and schemes around them. Hopefully, we won't see any Cover 0 blitzes this season. Also, I hope the front 7 are good enough to compensate for the crappy secondary.

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
Would have loved Carr too (especially to keep him away from Dallas), and I AM fairly concerned. Weirdly enough, I think our safety play will surprise us all with being simply adequate. Maybe Jackson can stay healthy and we'll have a decent free safety. All the camp reads are saying Griffin is getting eaten up in camp. Maybe Barnes/Crawford battle it out for some playing time which would be kind of scary...

Re: Secondary a Primary Concern
If we can generate a better pass rush and R. Morris couches these guys up a bit; Ithink we got a shot of being at least average in the secondary.
