Bruce Allen or Mike Shanahan

Who should be in charge of personnel? Does Bruce Allen have little if any say in who the Redskins draft? Bruce Allen is the only GM to ever draft a kicker in the 1st round, but most of his draft picks, especially earlier in his career, has been excellent picks. In the case of Mike Shanahan, how often in the NFL does a HC wear the GM hat as well and is successful? And lastly, a question to Redskins nation. Who would you rather have picking the players, Allen or Shanahan?

Re: Bruce Allen or Mike Shanahan

The kicker he drafted in the 1st was following Al Davis orders.

Looking back at history, the GM made the picks and acquired the players in free agency and the head coach coached them. But Bruce is not picking the players. Shanahan is.

I feel like all of these recent threads are just restated themes from the fire Shanny thread...

Somewhat. But I'm not taking anything away from Shanahan the head coach. I question his evaluation of talent. The NY Midgets have Jerry Reese scouting and drafting their players and Tom Coughlin coaching them. That's the same formula that was used during the glory years with Bobby Bethard and Joe Gibbs. Shanahan's evaluation of talent can also be questioned in his decision making as HC like releasing Terrance Austin and keeping Aldrick Robinson. Austin was simply the better and more reliable wide receiver.

Where is Austin now?

Not sure I'd use a move like that to point out talent evaluation issues.

Gibbs wasn't completely out of the equation in the scouting process back in those days, so give him a little credit there. You've mentioned Terrance Austin. What team is he starting for now? I suppose you're not going to give Shanahan any credit for Albert Morris? You would agree that Shanahan made the right decision in starting Fred Davis, finding guys like Pierre Garçon and Josh Morgan? I personally think Mike and Bruce have done a pretty good job in finding talent for the offense.

?

I really wish Austin would have stepped up and shown that on the field the 3 or more yrs he was here instead of riding the bench every year.

Now that Garcon is probably done for the year lets IR him and let him get his surgery. Move Aldrick to his position since he's the next fastest WR, and resign Austin to make you happy.

Robinson's speed doesn't mean squat unless he catches the damn football. He is talented and all WRs drop passes but Robinson drops too many. As far as Austin goes, I don't predict that they'll bring him back.
