Not exactly. He's the guy who inherited an aging team that was ripe for a 4-12 downfall. Before his one season at the helm, Richie was the best D-coordinator we ever had, and that includes Gregg Williams and Marvin Lewis.

Yep, replaced Gibbs. I coached for many years, and there was an old saying. Dont replace a legend, replace the guy who replaces the legend and you'll be fine.

You guys can knock Richie all you want, but he was the best DC this team has ever had. I wish we could have someone like him again.

Gregg Williams was just as good in my mind as Petibon was. Only difference is that GG didn't have the type of offensive support that Petibon got under Gibbs I.

Not even close, most of Richie's personnel were mid to low round picks and FA's.

If you think he coached a gem against Elway in Super Bowl XXII, take another look at what he did to Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed in Super Bowl XXVI. That Bills team was basically "The Greatest Show on Turf" for that era, and Petibon's scheme battered them that day. Kelly was picked off 4 times, and Thomas, who led the league in yards from scrimmage, was held to 40 total yards. That game wasn't nearly as close at the 37-24 final score, with the Bills getting two TD's in garbage time after the Skins took a 37-10 lead going into the 4th quarter. I will always remember that defensive game plan as Petibon's Masterpiece.

Was he also the coach when we won against Miami? The Super Bowl was probably the reason they drafted Dan Marino the next year. They completed 4 passes all game. Since after halftime they had none (and only 2 first downs and 34 total yards), I guess we made a halftime adjustment! I remember I was watching with supporters for both teams. After Riggo scored we only had a 3 point lead with 10 minutes to play, but all the Miami supporters left because they knew they wouldn't score any more points! They scored their TDs on a 76-yard pass play on Miami's second series and a 98-yard KO return. (27-17 final score.)

RP took over an old team that had just peaked a year earlier and was ripe for a big collapse. He really didn't get a fair shake as HC.

After a decade of just flat out dominating the NFL there's only one way to go and it ain't up. Petibon had no one on that roster...most Redskins ballers moved on, retired or were at the end of their careers. Anyone that blames Petibon for that terrible 1993 season has no clue.

Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube

Petibon was a better DC than Gwilliams in my opinion.

Say what you want for Gibbs 2.0 but the combo of Gibbs and a high quality DC in Gwilliams sure did look good on paper....we did get to the playoffs a couple times after all
I think Snyder did a good job on assembling a quality coaching staff there.

The only problem was lack of talent in my opinion and a GM worth a crap of course.
It was certainly worth a shot.

Every effort since Gibbs 1.0 is to try to duplicate that magic combo.
That is where I feel Hasslet falls short...as well as our oline guy...kinda dissapointed in him

Re: What happened to Richie Petibon? I love youtube

There was some article last year about what Petitbon is up to these days. It was during the whole Zorn downfall in the 2nd half of last year.

I thought Petitbon was a fantastic defensive coordinator who had the poor timing of being a head coach during a year of transition for not only the Skins but the NFL (with the advent of modern day free agency I believe beginning that year).

But when I watched the games back then it never really looked like he was enjoying himself as head coach.

The stories I've heard from players/personnel who were with the team at the time were that several players were upset with the treatment he gave certain veterans like Art Monk, Earnest Byner, Mark Rypien (basically singling them out and making them earn their spots-like Marty did with DG); Petitbon and Casserly clashed a lot. Petitbon had been hoping he'd get the Bears job that year because he didn't want to deal with Casserly anymore, though at the time he was going for the Bears job he didn't know he'd be the Redskins head coach soon. Casserly didn't have quite the same problems with Petitbon but was upset that Petitbon was calling Casserly out at Redskins Park for not giving Petitbon a good enough team to work with. And finally, Petitbon was furious he was fired for a former Cowboy. Thought that was a slap in the face and for many years (maybe even still today) wanted nothing to do with the Redskins.

That's really sad. The hiring of Norvelle will always be associated w/a dark time in our beloved team's history to me, much more so than Petitbon's dismal 93 season.
