Punts vs. Field Goals
Our punter is also our holder.
I think we should leave Hunter in for the holder and let Suisham or someone else punt - not bring in a new guy. We're talking a difference of `10-20 yards average between suisham and hunter as a punter. who says a new guy would be any better than suisham? if he were wouldn't he be on a team now? On the other hand, with a new holder suisham could miss a game winning field goal. I think our defense can hold the extra 20 yards and since hunter should be back in a week or so - why get a new guy? If we're backed up in our own endzone - here's an idea - call a hail marry to the 50 yard line or even the 40 and let campbell throw a strategic interception on third down. would a stat hungry safety or CB have the brains to drop the ball on purpose? Now once we're inside their 40 just go for it on 4th down or kick a field goal if we can. so for the few fourth downs between the 30 and 50 - let suisham kick it 25 yards and trust the defense. But lets not risk the 3 points until we're confident that our redzone problems are solved. (lets try cooley, kelly and marko on fade routes? how do you stop that?) |

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
Why not just bring in a punter and leave Hunter active to be the holder. We have plenty of players not producing so loosing one guy for a game or two should not hurt us. Do we even no how bad Hunter is hurt?

I concur. Don't want something f_ed up on an important FG attempt, and lord knows with the Skins a FG will be all the difference.

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
See: we can debate punters.
I'm not sure if I agree. One of our biggest issues on last year's team was an awful punting team. If we went with Suisham, we'd be conceding at least that much. Holders are important though, much moreso than long snappers, IMO. Thing is, if we can find a suitable replacement, it's worth the roster spot. If we can't, we're wasting valuable roster space. So as long as Vinny/Zorn see none-of the above as a possible answer, I think it's a no-lose situation

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
My understanding is that Hunter Smith will be active this Sunday as a holder

I was just about to type the same thing, only with more style and gusto.

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
That is my understanding. Hunter will continue holding whether we sign a punter or not.

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
we've got to sign a punter, even if he only plays this week. with this team's scoring problems, can't afford to give up 10-15 yards every punt.
I expect to see alrdige cut to make room |

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
Suisham did an admirable job filling in but you can't let him continue to punt. Field position is huge especially for a team struggling to score.

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
It kind of sucks that we have to use up two roster spots this weekend for a punter and holder

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
Really, you cannot think of one player that we could sit for a game and not miss their production? For some reason I looked up hunters ranking and he is ranked 31st in the NFL but I'm not sure how they rank punters. We will be the first team to look at a punter and instead of punting we will have them run the 40.

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
The Skins have to sign a punter. Preferably a veteran free agent. As close as the Redskin games are, field position is crucial. I understand Zorn's concern of breaking up the field goal combination. In that case, keep Hunter on the active roster and deactivate a non contributor.

Re: Punts vs. Field Goals
I really don't like seeing Suisham punting. What if he pulls a groin and takes a big hit while punting. Placekicking is much more important than punting.
