Has Phillip Daniels retired?

I know this is an odd post, but i noticed that the Redskins roster does not have Daniels on it and he is not on the depth chart.

He mentioned nothing about it on comcast sports this evening.

He is also no longer shown on the depth chart.
Washington Redskins

I shot off an email to JLC to see if he knows anything. If I get a reply, I'll post it here.

Sometimes not seeing a defensive player "do much" is a good thing. There is a reason teams don't run to his side. He is a clogger. He's not a guy that's going to get many sacks, or probably even a lot of tackles anymore, but he demands respect from the offense and it shows in the way other teams game plan for the Skins.

Phillip Daniels is a great locker room guy and a heady player on the field. If he chooses to retire, he will be missed.

Thank you. Daniels has been a great team player for us. As long as he can be productive on the field, not stellar - productive, I hope we can keep him.

I agree. He's a very underrated key cog in our run defense.

From a cap perspective, there are only two things the Redskins should be thinking about doing with him:

1) Cutting him outright (or letting him retire, either one), thereby saving $3.0 million in 2008.

2) Extending him for another three years in order to keep him and get his 2008 cap number ($3.75 million) down. A simple restructure will do no good, he only has one year left on his deal.

I prefer #2.

Re: Has Phillip Daniels retired?

Glad to see Daniels getting some love. I think the guy has been playing above expectations all year. He clogs the line & on pass plays he gets a solid push to close the pocket, plus he gets his hands on the ball better than anybody & those plays can be huge. Also, he has rushed the passer well as a DT on passing downs. Remember the sack of Romo in Dallas that got us the ball back? That was huge, although JC threw the pick to end the game.

I hope he can play out his deal here & work in a rotation w/a young draft pick, Wilson et al.

He has magically reappeared on both the Depth Chart and the Roster. If he was going to announce his retirement any day now, he has probably decided to wait a few days considering what went down today...
