Two days after former teammate LaVar Arrington signed with the New York Giants, Washington Redskins linebacker Lemar Marshall called the news "kind of crazy."
"It would be different if we saw him just once, but now we'll see him twice a year, so it'll be fun," Marshall said yesterday at Redskin Park. "Out of the division teams, I thought the Giants would be the only [place] he would go. The Giants and that market will be good for him."
Arrington, released by the Redskins last month, signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Giants on Saturday. The Giants and Redskins will meet for the first time Oct. 8 at the Meadowlands.
"We wish LaVar the absolute best unless he's playing against us," coach Joe Gibbs said. "We hope he gets healthy and plays extremely well there. We don't like the fact we're going to play him twice in the division, but we realized that was a possibility when we set things up."
Arrington sacrificed $4.4 million in bonus money in exchange for his freedom as a free agent. He also was pursued by Jacksonville, Miami and Green Bay.
Lloyd's deal: $25 million
David Dunn, the agent for receiver Brandon Lloyd, said yesterday that Lloyd's contract is a five-year extension worth $25 million and includes a $10 million signing bonus.
Since acquiring Lloyd from San Francisco for a third-round pick this year and a fourth-round pick next year, the Redskins have been in negotiations with Dunn.
"When I first got here, [a new contract] wasn't the main issue — the main issue was getting the trade done," Lloyd said. "I had complete confidence in the front office and my agent that a deal would get done."
Lloyd, 24, had 48 catches for San Francisco last year.
Injury update
Center Casey Rabach continues to rehabilitate a surgically repaired shoulder, which he injured during the season, and his lower left leg, which he injured in an ATV accident earlier this month.
"We had a real concern about Casey because that was an ugly injury," Gibbs said. "In two weeks, it will be totally healed, and he'll start to get back into a running program."
Gibbs said right guard Randy Thomas (broken leg) is working with a blocking sled but has not returned to running, and defensive end Phillip Daniels has recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery.
Around the park
Gibbs said new safety Adam Archuleta has been splitting his time between Redskin Park and his California home.
"In general, we want everybody here every day, but it's voluntary," Gibbs said. "In Arch's case, it's a little different. He has a lifting program he's used for years. He's spent two weeks here, one week out there and then two weeks here." ...
Gibbs talked with safety Sean Taylor about his legal issues. Taylor's assault trial has been delayed indefinitely while the prosecution gets a new lead attorney up to speed.
"There were reasons for it being moved each time," Gibbs said. "I don't think anybody has a handle on it. If they continue to move it, it would be a concern as the season gets closer."
