S. Taylor tragedy compared against other sports..
Roberto Clemente, Thurman Munson, Marshall football, Bobby Phills, Reggie Lewis, Len Bias.. Putting the circumstances of other atheletes aside what is worse than Taylor's tragic event? Other tragedies seem to fade away however what happened to Taylor leaves an impression. I called a local radio station 105.5 WEEI Boston after the Taylor murder to defend him because of the self-enriched dj's that put Taylor's death on him as his fault because of his surroundings. I lost my father to an act of violence when he was the age of 24, my mother was pregant with me at the time. Growing up poor I still became a physical therapist through family support and student loans. Outside of Washington D.C. the Taylor tragedy is brushed aside like it did not matter. Taylor's commitment to the game and his heart still inspires me. We are blessed to be Redskins fans, and we should always hold 21 close to our hearts. When I go to the games next year.. I want to see 21 jerseys everywhere. I absorb this website and have respect for every post because we all share a common passion for our team. Thank you for your time.

To compare is useless,it's what the impact to you personally means. If that gives you strength than fine but to state that one tragic incident is more important than others well........ |

Re: S. Taylor tragedy compared against other sports..
The Roberto Clemente tragedy stands head & shoulders above all the others mentioned. Roberto was on his way (on New Years eve no less) to assist earthquake victims in Nicaragua when his plane crashed off Puerto Rico. He was on a mission to help others and that's what makes it so tragic. Had he been like most athletes today he would have never helped at all let alone give up his holiday to get on a plane to fly to a disaster zone to help and therefore would never have died. Clemente's death was a true tragedy, the others are accidents with terrible consequences.

I think all of the above qualify as tragedies in their own right.
It's useless to try to compare or rank them. |

In every instance, many close to the deceased lost a father, brother, son, or friend. They're all equally tragic because family and friends are ultimately all that matter in this world.
How they died, how old they were, what they were doing, what their careers were like, none of that matters. The family lost someone very close to them well before their time. It's just as tragic when it happens to anybody.

But I do agree with the sentiment that it seems rather futile to compare deaths.

Re: S. Taylor tragedy compared against other sports..
I also agree u can't rank em, cuz this is never productive. It can only lead to disagreements and dishonoring the deceased. Also, from a logical standpoint each one of these tragedies was unprecedented and unique in its own right. Personally the one that affected me the most was obv ST's so I have an obvious bias. Outside of that, being a MD grad, the Len Bias incident almost brought MD athletics to its knees. I mean for God's sake, it had a huge public figure like Larry Bird breaking down in tears. It also served the purpose of bringing the ever-present drug abuse among athletes to the public limelight, which in the longrun was/is a good thing. There is no question it (as well as all of these events) had a huge societal impact.

Re: S. Taylor tragedy compared against other sports..
I agree about there is no comparison...however, how many of them were actually murdered?
The only one I can think of that turned a sport upside down is Dale Earnhardt Sr. Sure unfortunate curcumstances befalled on all of the previous mentioned players (except Bias who with his drug overdose, killed himself) but I can't think of anyone that was murdered like Taylor was...it seems unprecedented to me. They are all tragic events, and have left a scar on sports. It's a shame.

Yea, I don't understand why you would compare and rank peoples deaths.

Re: S. Taylor tragedy compared against other sports..
It's hard to compare tragic events, because each one is so different. At the same time, it is ludicrous to blame ST's surroundings. This tragedy had nothing to do with growing up on the streets of Miami.
ST was killed by a random act of violence. Taylor was doing what anyone would do...he was protecting his home and family. By all accounts Taylor had turned his life around. Nothing pisses me more than to hear someone say Taylor's death was a result of his environment. Those that say this are just plain ignorant. Better end here, because this topic will cause me to get on a soapbox. |
