Talent Acquisition: Synder/Gibbs Style vs Jones/Parcells Style

You all must have heard by now that The Cowboys have released their 2003 3rd round pick and their 2004 3rd round pick - OG Stephen Peterman, and QB Drew Henson.

The press core asked Parcells if he regretted losing those players because of the investment and the waste of a draft pick.

He replied that they are in the Talent Acquisition business, and that some of his undrafted gems offset the 3rd round busts.

I saw this on a Cowboys site and thought it might be of interest here.

"Is he saying that low drafts picks are overvalued? Maybe our friend Dan Synder is ahead of the curve here. As all of you know, every year the Skins give away their draft picks for unspectacular yet proven talent…they did it again last night by giving away next year’s 3rd rounder for TJ Duckett. It has me thinking, is a team better off keeping their draft picks and taking their chance on a boom or bust player or is it better to trade them for steady proven talent? Below is a summary of both the Boys and the Skins 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft picks over the past five year. You be the judge, who has fared better with their respective strategies?

Skins ‘06

1. Traded pick as part of Jason Campbell pick.
2. Roger McIntosh; they also gave up an ‘07 2nd round pick to move up to take him.
3. Traded pick as well as their ‘07 4th rounder for Brandon Lloyd.

Cowboys ‘06

1. Carpenter
2. Fasano
3. Hatcher

Skins ‘05

1. Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell
2. Traded pick to move up in ‘04 to select Chris Cooley.
3. Traded pick to trade for Brunell

Boys ‘05

1. Ware and Spears
2. Burnett
3. Hensen–no longer on roster

Skins ‘04

1. Sean Taylor
2. Traded pick along with Champ Bailey to obtain Clinton Portis
3. Chris Cooley

Boys ‘04

1. Traded for Bills 1st rounder in ‘05 and Bills 2nd rounder in ‘04
2. Rogers–no longer on roster; Jones
3. Peterman–no longer on roster

Skins ‘03

1. Traded to Jets to pick up Coles; later traded Coles for Santana Moss
2. Taylor Jacobs–no longer on roster
3. Derrick Dockery

Boys ‘03

1. Newman
2. Johnson
3. Witten

Skins ‘02

1. Patrick Ramsey–traded to Jets for a 6th rounder
2. Ladell Betts
3. Rashad Bauman–no longer on roster; Cliff Russell–no longer on roster

Boys ‘02

1. Williams
2. Gurode; Bryant–traded for Quincy Morgan–no longer on roster
3. Ross–no longer on roster

So let’s add it up:

Including the players that have been traded for, the Skins have 11 of those player still on their roster, but you would have to subtract 1 player since they gave up Champ Bailey to obtain Clinton Portis. The Cowboys have 12 of those players still on their roster, so only 2 more.

How ’bout from a talent standpoint? Who are the true superstars (I’m talking proven Pro Bowlers or most likely to be a Pro Bowler) obtained with those picks/trades?

The Skins:

Chris Cooley
Santana Moss

Once again, Portis is a superstar, but so is Champ Bailey so they offset. It’s too early to tell for Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell.

The Boys:

Ware
Newman
Witten
Williams

Those are definitely 4 superstars. The verdict is still out on this year’s draftees as well as Burnett, Spears, and Jones.

So what do you guys think…who has the better strategy?"

Now I can see the Cowboy Colored glasses on this guy. He failed to include Sean Taylor. And I am sure that the name Roy Williams and Terrance Newman will be objectionable to some of you. but really, for all the complaining about the Skins throwing their future away this list doesn't seem to support that.

An advantage for Dallas is that the Drafted players come cheaper initially.

newman a superstar? i am not sure about that.

but if they consider him one than why dont they consider ST one for us? did anyone point that out to this guy?

ware had one good season. he has all the talent in the world but i would put him in the 'verdict is still out' category.

***EDIT*** i didnt notice that last paragraph before i replied.....sorry.

Dallas does a good job either drafting or simply cuz they have draft picks. The defense surely will reap the benefits and prolong their franchise as an outcome. I really wish we had Ware on our team.

Yes, but if the name of the game is keeping enough talent to keep your team in the hunt for the SB, then the Snyder/Gibbs method isn't as short sighted as it is often accused as being.

interesting bit of reading but the writer was definately looking through blue glasses. taylor undoubtingly, should be on the list and if he's gonna put ware on the list then i feel he should include carlos rogers.

ps. newman is nowere near superstar material.

As long as they can sign whomever they want, they shouldn't be considered short sighted. The truth is that everyone that takes the short sighted stance is projecting into the future instead of looking at the fact that in the past the skins fill almost all thier major needs every year without ever really facing the projected cap hell.

Re: Talent Acquisition: Synder/Gibbs Style vs Jones/Parcells Style

I'd say honestly it's a wash for both teams. You REALLY can't put Ware and Newman on that list quite yet. I'd even give Newman the nod over Ware. If you're calling what he did last year superstar stats, then you might want to go ahead and add Phillip Daniels, because he actually had better stats. Also, you'd want to add Sean Taylor and Shawn Springs.

I'll even give Roy the nod saying that he belongs in your list. The reason I say it's a wash is because the Skins trade picks away to get the "sure things", players just entering their prime. Of course, this isn't without exception.

The Cowboys prefer to stockpile numerous draft picks and will deal with the consequences of "busts". Both ways work, and both teams have found legitimate starters and stars in the draft and in free agency.

Re: Talent Acquisition: Synder/Gibbs Style vs Jones/Parcells Style

I say we simply compare the end year results.

If I remember, last year we made the POs. cow-not-quite-men, nada, zip, zero, zilch!

And, I believe we won at TB. g-nomes lost at home! At home!

So, by that count, we are ahead of both cow-not-quite-men, and g-nomes,

with all of the drafting vs. fa signings!

Somehow, I don't remember much about the e-girls POs luck last year.

Re: Talent Acquisition: Synder/Gibbs Style vs Jones/Parcells Style

I am starting to belive the way Gibbs and Snyder do things is the best way for us. Now if all 31 other teams felt that way it would not work. But for us its fine. We have a hell of a roster that has been built since Gibbs came back. Are we starting to figure out why Gibbs won so many superbowls yet? Is there a colleration between how good the NFC east is now and Gibbs? I think Mr. Synder brought Gibbs back because he is a winnner and knows how to get the job done as well as what he needs to get the job done. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS AND JOE GIBBS!!!

Re: Talent Acquisition: Synder/Gibbs Style vs Jones/Parcells Style

I don't think there's any right or wrong way to build a team. Just because the Patriots have dominated recently by drafting and cultivating cheap talent doesn't mean that's the only way to get it done.

The Rams of 1999 traded for Marshall Faulk, used a very high draft pick (#8 overall) to select Torry Holt, signed Trent Green (who got hurt), and signed Kurt Warner out of the CFL. Not much unearthing of late round picks there. They did unearth a gem in Warner from the CFL, which is what the Skins have attempted to do with Lumsden.

It's not the method that matters. It's hitting it big that matters. The Rams gave up a 2nd and a 5th rounder to get Faulk from the Colts. I'd say the Rams hit the jackpot there.

There's no right or wrong way to acquire talent. The NFL is more about coaching than it is about talent acquisition anyway. Whoever can teach players more effectively has a leg up.

Re: Talent Acquisition: Synder/Gibbs Style vs Jones/Parcells Style

As an FYI, Kurt Warner was never in the CFL. He played arena football. Lumsden on the other hand played his college football in Canada and broke many school and Canadian University records and was drafted last year (can not remember by who) then got released and played for Hamilton in the CFL. He then got picked up by the Redskins.

He was a great running back in college, but with our overloaded backfield, I think he may end up back in Canada for another year. It is too bad, but unless we get rid of Betts and Rock, I think it will be the best thing for him as he will have another year of playing full time under his belt.
