Sports Writer Fired for Manipulating Ballot

TAMPA, Fla. -- A Tampa Tribune sports writer was fired after she admitted to manipulating the balloting for a local prep football award, the newspaper reported Friday.

Rozel A. Lee, who was among 19 journalists and high school coaches who ranked eight top football players competing for the Guy Toph Award, said she intentionally gave her lowest ranking to a leading player to make it more likely that the player she favored would win.


Tribune Executive Editor Janet Weaver said Lee's voting practice was "dishonest." Lee, 51, who has been at the Tribune for 10 years, was fired Thursday.

"I've always voted like this," Lee said, explaining her vote for Robinson High School quarterback Marcello Trigg, who edged Hillsborough High School quarterback Jarred Fayson in the balloting. "When you want a desired outcome, you are going to eliminate the closest opponent to that desired outcome."

Fayson would have won if Lee had ranked him fifth or higher on her ballot, the Tribune reported.

A call to Lee's home from The Associated Press wasn't answered Friday.

Fayson said he has no hard feelings.

"Trigg deserved to win, and he got it for a reason," he told the Tribune. "The two of us were the victim of the circumstances."

Newspapers around the nation have begun to question whether journalists should be voting for sports awards and hall-of-fame honorees, said Glen Crevier, president of the Associated Press Sports Editors.

"More and more, editors are deciding they are not going to participate anymore," said Crevier, assistant managing editor for sports at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "But the bottom line is that you have to vote honestly. You can't do it any other way."

Weaver said Tribune editors will review whether reporters should be allowed to vote in polls, awards or for hall-of-fame admissions.

Ellard had a very similar career to Monks', and both have very good career numbers. I don't see a reason why either should be kept out of the Hall.

ellard came to the skins later in his career and i didnt expect much,but for the few years he was here,he was very productive.longevity has to count for someting and his career was very much like monks.if you put lynn swann in,ellard and monk both have to be in.i personally think swann shouldnt be in and was very over rated.ill probably be hearing from lawyer bill

Adjusted for time period Ellards numbers are slightly lower but I think he is a legitimate HOFer. I think Monk would immediately be one of the top 3 WRs in the hall.

Monk deserves the Hall more than anyone. In his career, he broke existing records for most catches (Largent - he's in the hall) and most receptions in a season (106 in 1984, which was WAY more than anyone else had caught before then)....he also caught over 60 TDs and would have had a lot more catches and yards if Clark and Sanders had not been equally prolific. Also, he was a class act who never opened up his mouth unless he had to and gave his heart and soul on the field. Monk has 3 rings and Ellard probably is a notch below the hall because he didn't bust open those records that Monk did. Jerry Rice's and Cris Carter's performances shouldn't underscore what Monk did before Rice broke all his records. On the other hand, Michael Irvin does NOT deserve to get into the Hall unless Monk does also. He had Aikman, Emmitt, and consistency at RB and QB over his years. Monk caught passes from Thiessman, Jay Schroeder, Stan Humprhies, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Cary Rutledge, etc. etc., winning super bowls with 3 different RBs and 3 different QBs just like Gibbs. Did I also mention that Michael Irvin is a possible drug user and thug based on his recent car stops and also stated that TO was not wrong for saying Farve would do that much better than McNabb. Irvin takes moron to a whole new level, while Monk was the definition of class. Class v. crass? I'll take Monk and those stupid writers better get it right this time. Monk rules, Irvin drools.

look at this...emmitt smith says he doesn't know how anybody could keep michael irvin out of the hall of fame, even though hes on drugs and is worse than monk

Monk had 817 more yards, 190 more catches, and 3 more touchdowns...he even had 326 more rushing yards

Monk played for 16 years while Irvin The Crackhead played for 12 years.

Its unfortunate, but I'd have to agree. The fact that its been so long defintley dosent work in his favor. I'm starting to wonder if he'll ever make it in....unbelivable. This is such a joke.
