smoot vs harris/wilds

im a fan of smoot, he is a solid corner, he is a classy guy and he is a true redskin.

there is alot of talk on a few threads that smoot isnt really needed since harris and wilds played well.

BS!

when smoot and springs are there, we can blitz the LB's since we know the corners can hold their own.

sundays game, williams put all LB's in coverage. he had the LB drop and crowd the passing lanes while the safeties covered deep. in other words, tre johnson could cover moss if he has lemar marshall cover the slant and taylor cover the deep patterns.

culpepper had all day. i know the line got a few sacks but most came after 6 seconds.

correct me if im wrong but wasnt wilds covering burleson one on one when burlseon dropped an easy touchdown?

if we lose smoot, we are going to have to blitz less next year and our dline will be exposed.

hey lets not forget about pierce covering moss on a TD play that was called back.

you cant play zone with our dline, they dont flat out beat a guy to get to the qb in under 3seconds. it doesnt happen.

two plays won the game for us. the moss td called back and the burleson drop. if they make those plays everyone is saying wilds sucks for getting beat and our corners suck, thats why we had a LB covering moss deep.

I agree that we can't afford to lose Smoot in favor of a 30 year old average starting corner with mediocre speed. I think Harris is probably one of the best nickel backs in the league and could make a decent #2, but because we don't get much of a rush from the front 4, we need near-shutdown corners and that's what Smoot and Springs gives us.

Who knows, maybe Williams could mask Smoot's absence, but I'd like to see our defense return intact. I'd hate to see our offense improve, only to watch our defense slide.

If we were to lose Smoot, what do you guys think of going after Ken Lucas in free agency?

I really don't know much about him but from what little I've seen of him he seems pretty solid.

I've heard a lot of good things about Ken Lucas as well. There should be a few other free agents to hit the market (i.e. Charles "A-1 a--hole" Woodson). I think Lucas' asking price won't be far off of Smoot's.

I have the feeling it's going to be Springs and Harris next year at corner. I don't know who they expect to play nickel. I see us drafting with the 3rd rounder or getting via free agency a decent nickel. I wouldn't mind trading Gardner for someone else's number two corner.

From what I have read in the washington post the Redskins offered Smoot an $11million signing bonus but he wants $14 million. If he was a true skin I dont think that he would let $3million be the determining factor. I think that we need him but not at his cost, besides that they also said that they offered him top 10 CB money.

I'm confident that Smoot will be back next year.

During the game Sunday, Wilds was lined up one on one with Moss. It scared the crap out of me. Gibbs referenced it in his press conference yesterday too. But, to have confidence in a young guy like that really says something.

Smoot is def. not worth 14 million are you kidding me. I think 11 mill is more than a enough. If he wants to be here he'll take that money. The important thing though is that if we can't reach an agreement with him, then we should tag him and then trade him. There are teams that will be willing to give up some picks to get him.

I don't think anyone is questioning Smoot's abilities, both as a player and a leader, BUT is he worth Bailey money? Definitely not in my opinion and I'd be interested to see if there is any team in the league willing to overpay for him. I seriously doubt it.

If he won't sign for what he's reportedly being offered, I wouldn't think twice about sending him packing.

Did Smoot forget how Torry Holt lit him up during Pre-Season? And, how Keyshawn Johnson caught every ball thrown his way when Smoot was covering him? He is a good corner against opponent's #2 receiver but he is not a starting corner material...and doesn't deserve to be paid like a top 10 cornerback.

....with you and I have always thought this. Walt Harris' coverage skills are equal to Smoots, if not better. IMO, I would rather have Harris playing in front of Smoot in all situations because of the physical play he brings, plus he can tackle. Smoot doesn't tackle.

One thing I have seen is that, on a young player's first go around in free agency (Dre Bly, Duane Starks, Dexter Jackson) some team WILL over pay.

If Smoot hits the open market, he will probably get the pay day he is asking. Whether or not he will live up to the payday is the next question.

He is trying to recoup money from having been paid crap for his whole career. Hes not worth what hes asking, but he was worth more than we were paying him

Smoot and his agent think that his market has been set by the Dre Bly and Champ Bailey contracts...however, I would expect corners' salaries to actually decrease due to the recent rule changes. If there ever was such a thing as a shutdown corner, they will not continue to exist if the rules are enforced.

wasn't it his own fault though for what caused him to drop from a sure first rounder to the second round pick that he became and lose that guaranteed money? plus I can understand wanting to recoup some money he feels he's deserved the past couple years, and snyder isn't an owner willing to pony up that money, but with all of his "I want to be a redskin" or "I love this place", then why would he ask for a huge overpayment of his talent and hinder the team from adding a couple important peices to the puzzle? I don't know if he's being over confident in his own talent, if he's being greedy, or just getting bad advice, but he should have atleast brought a reasonable offer to the table that could be worked with and not ask for top 8 cb money when he's only in the 12-20 range in ranking of starting cbs.
