Google plans to build high-speed broadband service

In an ambitious bid to revolutionize how consumers use the Internet, technology giant Google Inc. says it will build a network that would be 100 times faster than what is available for many users today.

yeah, kinda "meh" about this. Seems like they're a little late to the party.

edit- meant to post this in the Google Buzz thread.

Re: Google plans to build high-speed broadband service

I think some other companies (Verizon?) have come out now and said they can provide faster technology as well so this may force faster service

What's interesting, to me at least, is that Google says the system will be open allowing customers to select from a wide variety of service providers. But does that mean I can choose Comcast cable, even though I'm not in a Comcast market? My guess is no. But we shall see

Re: Google plans to build high-speed broadband service

It's crazy how slow America has been. I understand that we have more land to cover than a lot of other places, but many European and Asian nations have made it a point to build their digital infrastructure to high standards. It's mostly the service providers choosing to spend their money limiting us than spending it to upgrade the networks. I know it can't cover the whole U.S. anytime soon but the fact that there is still a great amount of civilization without even basic broadband is crazy; and that DC, L.A., NYC, etc isn't even near what some countries have against most of their inhabited areas.

there's some 100mbps providers in small areas including a provider in utah (utopia) that has 100 up and down.. I don't know if they ever connected it to more residents than the one pilot

I think cablevision has 101mb down and a much much smaller up

a lot of japan is on gigabit networks, we've got a ways to go
