Jumbo Package

I just wanted others opinions on the goal line Jumbo Package that we continue to use.Like B Mitch said when the broadcast booth knows its coming you can be sure the defense does too.

Im not trying to start a fuss here,I just want other views on maybe why we continue to attempt it. Cuz I dont have a clue.

Because it worked in the 80's. Of coarse in the 80's teams knew it was coming but couldn't stop it because of the hogs, Gibbs is stuck in a time capsule believing the hogs are still out there, they ain't!

Re: Jumbo Package

This has been discussed in other threads, but yes, it's a package from a bygone era.

It allows the defense to concentrate just about everybody into one small area. Plus, we don't have the guys who can broadcast where a play is designed to go and dare anyone to stop us.

Everything has been discussed in other threads. I did a search and apparently missed it. Sorry.

Re: Jumbo Package

One time inside the 5 we threw on 3 downs & didn't get in. The last time we got inside the 5, the first play was Portis left for a TD. I'm sure this made Gibbs think that he should've run the ball the first time we were inside the 5.

I think the answer is that there has to be some balance to make the d respect both run & pass. We tried to pass out of the jumbo but couldn't get open. I like the bootleg call, but run it to the weak (naked) side & let JC run it in if it's open. They never seem to call him on a bootleg right inside the 5.

Re: Jumbo Package

I wouldn't pay much attention to want Mitchell says. I would like for him to just once hold the players accountable for how they play. It's easy to see why we sucked so bad in the 90s. He thinks everything is the coaches' fault. I'm still waiting for him to apologize for fumbling against the 49ers in January of 1993 and ruining my day. I suppose that was Gibbs' fault too, though. He should have called a pass. And he should take responsibilty for dropping about 7 passes against Arizona in 1995. That one was Norv's fault. They should have been running the ball on those plays. When I know what someone is going to say before they even open their mouth, it's a strong indication that are pushing an agenda, and I always know what Mitchell is going to say. People shouldn't take him seriously.

Re: Jumbo Package

It seems they allow Al to get us into the redzone, then take the playcalling away from him. I dont understand it! We even brought in a 6'5 guy a couple of weeks ago, you would think they could use him (life every other NFL team does) for one of those jump ball plays in the end zone. nothing else they run works for crap.

Jason makes good plays and good throws to get us down there, then he is left with one receiver as his option inside the 20, its ridiculous. like I have said time and time again, this staff has too many cooks in the kitchen. If Joe comes back, I guarantee Al wont. his offenses are too good to be stuck in nuetral week in and week out.

Re: Jumbo Package

Every team has a Jumbo package where they use an extra lineman in short yardage and goal line. It just hasn't been effective for the Skins this season. I firmly believe it would have been more successful with our O-line that opened the season, but without that luxury, and repeated failures, I believe that we would be more effective spreading the field and using high percentage passing in short yardage. Look at New England, they keep defenses off balance, throwing the ball to Vrabel, Moss, or Welker in short yardage as much as they run it.

Re: Jumbo Package

The redzone offense has been a huge problem all year, but especially recently as Campbell has begun to move the ball effectively through the air. Gotta get fixed.

The thing that really strikes me about this team is that when they lack confidence in something, it is just OBVIOUS to everyone, opponents and fans included. It's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy: they get down there and think, "uht ough, we're in the redzone. We're not good at this. I hope we don't mess up" and then, of course, they mess up. It's like thinking about not tripping when you're walking--makes it much more likely you'll stumble. And the same goes for the 4th quarter--it's VERY much mental, from Gibbs and Saunders on down, IMO.

How do you fix that? Win games in the red zone and in the 4th, hold a lead, etc. But until we break out of that funk, we've got problems. I won't point any fingers to coaches or players at the moment, but that's where the fix has to come, or changes have to come.

Re: Jumbo Package

Wait, every team has a jumbo package. The Patriots bring in linebackers in their jumbo package and Mike Vrabel has two touchdowns this year! Knowing what's coming and being able to stop it are two different things.

It's all about execution, which is where we are lacking across the board.
