Did you use NFL.com ticket exchange? I listed a pair of my preseason tickets for sale on there and I noticed an option for electronic delivery. It is something they call "ticket fast". I usually sell through Stub Hub when i can't go and with Stubhub I mail the actual hard copy of the ticket out. I think this ticket fast thing may be where the business is heading.

TicketFast®: We are able to electronically validate and reissue ticket barcodes on select tickets. The process of reissuing the ticket does not require intervention from a sales agent and a link to your tickets is sent directly to you.
