Yes, it's "twisty for twisty sake" but the book was written that way on purpose. It was made to be kind of a throw back, pulp fictiony (not the movie but the genre) story.
Agreed on all counts. I felt the story threw the viewers a few misdirections to keep you thinking throughout the film. Scorsese's direction was top notch and the scene with Leo and his his wife by the lake was amazing.

Fight Club was definitely both a great book and film adaptation. Palahniuk is one crazy writer.
