Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 8)
From the Redskins Mailbag:
Question: If the Redskins switch to a 3-4, will Rocky McIntosh move inside? If McIntosh stays outside, what will happen with Andre Carter?
-- Jesus C.
Gary: This was cleared up during mini-camp. In a 3-4, McIntosh would play inside linebacker next to London Fletcher. Carter, who continues to rehab from biceps surgery, would line up on the outside. It’s a change in role for Carter, but he is still expected to rush the passer. He was an outside linebacker in San Francisco when the 49ers used a 3-4 in 2005, so he has experience at linebacker. Even though he prefers defensive end, coaches are going to put him in position to maximize his unique athleticism and skill set.

Question: Hey Gary, with Andre Carter and Jeremy Jarmon switching to linebackers (in a 3-4 alignment), and the Redskins drafting Perry Riley as well, it seems we are “ready for battle” with our linebackers. Who do you see panning out as our starters, though? Thanks!
-- Stephen B.
Gary: It’s a little early to anoint starters, but it’s probably safe to assume that Carter and Brian Orakpo would start at outside linebacker and Rocky McIntosh and London Fletcher would start on the inside in a 3-4. Once Jarmon is fully recovered from his knee ligament injury, he is expected to join Lorenzo Alexander and Chris Wilson in competing for playing time at outside linebacker. Riley joins H.B. Blades, Chris Draft and Robert Henson competing for playing time at inside linebacker.
